Unlocking the Secrets Behind the Villains in Wicked with Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh
As the awards season gains momentum leading up to the Oscars, the cast of the highly acclaimed Wicked is making a significant impact with their emerald green promotional efforts. In a recent conversation with Rotten Tomatoes, the iconic Wizard of Oz, portrayed by Jeff Goldblum, alongside the formidable Madame Morrible, played by Michelle Yeoh, shared their insightful interpretations of their characters. When questioned about their villains’ inspirations from historical figures, they provided compelling perspectives that resonate with contemporary themes.
The original literary work by Gregory Maguire, along with its Broadway adaptation crafted by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, presents the duo as authoritarian figures masked by the dazzling facade of Oz. Goldblum and Yeoh’s performances brilliantly reflect the pressing issues of power dynamics and corruption, drawing parallels to real-world political figures and the complexities of leadership.
In an engaging dialogue about his collaboration with Wicked director Jon M. Chu, Goldblum articulated, “Throughout human history, there have been individuals who, despite appearing congenial, have used the tactic of demonizing others to consolidate power. Sometimes, these individuals possess a certain charm that makes them even more dangerous. Jon’s guidance was instrumental in shaping my approach. I meticulously prepared my lines and had numerous creative ideas that complemented the beautifully crafted script.”
Goldblum elaborated, “Jon facilitated a creative environment by inviting Ariana [Grande] and Cynthia [Erivo] to rehearse certain scenes. He encouraged me to explore alternative interpretations of the script, fostering a collaborative atmosphere filled with joy and synergy. Looking into their eyes, it was impossible not to feel inspired to generate countless new ideas.”
For Yeoh, who previously teamed up with Chu on the blockbuster Crazy, Rich Asians, her role as Madame Morrible marks a deeper exploration into the realm of villainy. As the headmistress at Shiz, she plays a crucial role in maintaining the Wizard’s power. Yeoh recounted her conversation with Chu, questioning, “Why do you envision me as someone who embodies a tough persona? Madame Morrible has her own agenda, one that she undoubtedly shares with the Wizard. Together, we pondered if there was always a deeper connection between the two characters.” The notion of a potential alliance between Morrible and the Wizard adds an intriguing layer to their dynamic.
She further explained, “Both characters engage in constant strategizing and manipulation to achieve their goals. Initially, Madame Morrible presents herself as a nurturing educator, creating a false sense of trust. This complicates Elphaba’s journey, as it is the first time she experiences genuine affection and recognition. Jon’s brilliance lies in making Madame Morrible a character that audiences initially want to believe in, as her support leads to Elphaba’s growth.”
Yeoh vividly illustrated how her character’s allure ultimately turns against Elphaba, who yearns to do good. As Elphaba discovers the treacherous plans of the Wizard and Morrible, she becomes a scapegoat. “Madame Morrible truly embodies the essence of a wicked witch. Both she and the Wizard are driven by their selfish ambitions, willing to sabotage others’ dreams to pursue their own desires. The Wizard wishes to escape to Kansas, while Madame Morrible yearns for her Book of Enchantment. It’s perplexing to her why Elphaba wouldn’t align with her vision, believing she is acting for the greater good. Jeff and I enjoyed the playful ambiguity of whether their intentions were genuine or manipulative, which added a layer of complexity to our performances.”
