The upbeat, colourful advertising for the sure-fire vacation hit Depraved has tiptoed round an important truth. It’s that when Depraved hits theaters on November 22, it’s solely half the story. That is merely “Half One,” although it’s not being known as that, with “Half Two” coming a 12 months later. Figuring out that, one would most likely count on the movie model to be a extra manageable size, particularly because it’s based mostly on a long-running, super-popular Broadway musical that itself runs underneath three hours. However, apparently, that’s not the case.
Tickets for Depraved will not be but on sale however the movie has discovered its manner onto the ticketing website, Fandango, which lists its run time as two hours and 40 minutes. The AMC Theaters web page says the identical—although, of be aware, Moviefone says two hours and 22 minutes. io9 has reached out to Common to see what the right runtime is and we are going to replace this submit if/after we hear again.
Assuming it’s two hours and 40 minutes although, that’s virtually the very same size because the entirety of the Broadway present. The present, give or take, runs two hours and 45 minutes with an intermission. So by some means this film model—even when it’s two hours and 22 minutes— has mainly doubled the size of the story.
Now, you totally count on it to be a minimum of just a little longer. Film variations of musicals can dive deeper into the characters and the world, virtually all the time have an additional track or two, and so on. So positive, you get that every film isn’t going to be a 1:1 cut up in half. It was by no means going to be 90 minutes. However to be virtually double that’s wild.
There’s additionally the little matter that most individuals contemplate the primary half of Depraved to be considerably higher than the second, primarily as a result of it has the extra upbeat, thrilling, and well-liked songs. Will Depraved half one be wonderful after which everybody waits a 12 months for an inferior however nonetheless very lengthy finale? It’s actually a risk.
Regardless of the case although, there are positive to be individuals who assume, at a size virtually equal to the present, Depraved is the total story. These individuals might to not be pleased when the credit roll in November except, in fact, the film is that good. And albeit, that’s what we’re hoping for.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, based mostly on the musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and ebook by Winnie Holzman (who wrote the script), Depraved stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, and Peter Dinklage. It opens November 22.
