Get ready for the exciting Sony CES 2025 keynote, which will be streamed live right here. The Afeela electric vehicle was the highlight of Sony’s press events in 2023 and 2024, and this year promises to keep that momentum going with a confirmed presence at the Sony event. This marks a significant evolution for Sony, a company traditionally recognized for its innovations in consumer electronics such as the iconic Walkman and Trinitron TVs, alongside its cutting-edge PlayStation consoles and Alpha cameras.

The Afeela represents a groundbreaking step for Sony Honda Mobility, a collaborative venture between the renowned electronics and transportation powerhouses. After its unexpected reveal at CES 2023, the 2024 event showcased critical advancements, including the EV’s sophisticated LiDAR sensor array and AI-driven cabin technology, developed with support from Microsoft. If the previously outlined timeline stays on track—preorders in 2025 leading to a 2026 release—we anticipate learning which of the Afeela’s concept features will transition from prototype to reality on city streets.

While the Afeela will be a focal point, expect Sony to also highlight its advancements in imaging technology, gaming, and potentially even its film studio initiatives. Additionally, there’s hope for fresh insights regarding the company’s XR headset, initially introduced at the 2024 event and since shrouded in mystery. CES 2025 could serve as the perfect venue for unveiling a substantial update to this potential competitor to the Apple Vision Pro.

  • Explore the New Features of Gemini AI in Google Home Devices

In case you missed the latest announcements, Google has revealed plans to incorporate Gemini AI into its smart home ecosystem, which includes devices like the Nest Audio, Nest Hub, and Nest Cameras. This integration aims to enhance user experiences by enabling more natural interactions with the digital assistant. Our reporter, Amy Skorheim, provided a sneak peek of this innovative feature at Google’s booth today. Here’s her insightful takeaway:

“One of the standout demonstrations involved a clever use of the Nest Hub. When asked, ‘Hey Google, what happened to the cookies on the counter?’ the hub retrieved footage from a connected Nest Cam, showcasing a dog stealthily snatching a cookie from the kitchen counter. The AI assistant narrated the video, detailing, ‘A dog jumped on the counter and looked at the cookies on December 12th at 1:29 PM.’ While this was a pre-recorded clip, it illustrates the potential of AI in smart home contexts.”

No CES experience would be complete without celebrity-driven product launches, and will.i.am has made his mark once again at the conference. Known for his previous ventures, such as the PULS bracelet, he continues to collaborate with LG, who recently appointed him as the company’s Experiential Architect to work on the xboom audio product line.

During the event, Billy Steele had the opportunity to test the LG xboom speakers, which include a trio of models. The Grab, the smallest speaker, impressed him with the depth of bass it delivered during the demo. Here’s what Billy noted:

“I was pleasantly surprised by the punchy bass produced by the xboom Grab, alongside its crisp highs and solid mids that maintained detail. Although the low-end tones felt slightly muted, my short listening session necessitates a more thorough review to confirm these impressions. Notably, the xboom Grab is capable of producing an astonishingly loud sound, reaching uncomfortable levels even at only 50 percent volume.”

  • While exploring CES, we encountered intriguing products that raised hygiene and comfort concerns. One such item was showcased by a company named Kirin, featuring a fascinating product called the Salt Spoon. This innovative spoon utilizes electrical technology to deliver umami flavors. Although I waited in line multiple times to experience it firsthand, I couldn’t get to taste it. However, feedback from attendees suggested that the salty flavor was indeed present. I’m determined to track down Kirin this week for a taste test.
