Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax tragically took the life of his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, before ending his own, according to police reports released on Thursday. Fairfax, once regarded as a rising star within the Democratic Party, saw his political ambitions severely impacted by numerous sexual assault allegations that surfaced several years ago, leading to his decline in public life.

Authorities discovered the bodies of Justin Fairfax, aged 47, and his wife, Dr. Fairfax, aged 49, in their home located in the Annandale area of Washington, D.C. Their teenage son made a 911 call shortly after midnight to report the incident, as confirmed by Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis. Notably, both children were present at home during this tragic event.

Unraveling the Divorce Process of Justin and Cerina Fairfax
The Fairfax couple was in the midst of a separation and divorce process. According to court documents, they separated in 2024 and subsequently filed for divorce the following year. Married since 2006, they were seemingly cohabitating despite their marital issues, residing together with their two children. Recently, Justin Fairfax received legal paperwork detailing his next court appearance, as indicated by Chief Davis.
In an earlier incident in January, police had responded to their home after Justin Fairfax claimed that his wife had assaulted him. However, upon reviewing the surveillance footage from their residence, authorities found his allegations to be unsubstantiated.
“During the divorce proceedings, it appears that Mrs. Fairfax had set up multiple cameras around the home. After reviewing that footage, we confirmed that the alleged assault did not occur,” Davis stated.

Dr. Cerina Fairfax was a dedicated professional who operated a family dentistry practice. Her academic journey included graduation from both Duke University and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, where she earned the prestigious recognition of being named its most outstanding alumna of the last decade in 2015.
“This is a tragic loss for the community,” Chief Davis commented. “Many individuals who were acquainted with the Fairfax family are deeply shocked and saddened by this news.”
Justin Fairfax, a former federal prosecutor and civil litigator, initially sought the Democratic nomination for attorney general in 2013 but faced defeat. However, he achieved success in 2017 when he won the race for lieutenant governor, marking a significant milestone in his political career.
Impact of Sexual Allegations on Justin Fairfax’s Political Journey
In early 2019, Justin Fairfax appeared to be on the verge of becoming Virginia’s second Black governor, especially as Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam faced immense pressure to resign over a controversial photo from his medical school yearbook that surfaced. However, the tide turned when two women stepped forward with allegations of sexual assault, claiming that Fairfax had assaulted them in the past.
Vanessa Tyson alleged that Justin Fairfax coerced her into performing oral sex in his hotel room during the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004. At that time, he was a student at Columbia Law School and working as an aide for the Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards. Just two days later, Meredith Watson came forward, accusing Fairfax of rape, claiming it occurred in 2000 while they both were students at Duke University.
In response to these serious allegations, Justin Fairfax vehemently denied all claims. Although no legal charges were filed against him, he maintained that the encounters were consensual and resisted calls for his resignation. Fairfax later attempted a gubernatorial run in 2021, which some viewed as an effort to restore his tarnished reputation; however, he faced significant pushback from Virginia Democrats. He believed that voters would recognize the allegations as a smear campaign, but unfortunately, he lost in the Democratic primary.
Legal documents reveal that following the sexual assault allegations, Fairfax encountered financial difficulties, which included his resignation from a prominent law firm. The IRS subsequently filed a lien against the couple for over $91,000 in unpaid taxes, though this matter was resolved in 2021.
