Although I was somewhat late in diving into this captivating narrative, I believe there’s no better moment to embrace this remarkable retelling of the iconic sapphic vampire tale, Carmilla, than during the vibrant celebration of Pride Month. This novel, titled Hungerstone, is a gothic masterpiece that intricately weaves the life of Lenore, a woman who finds herself uprooted from the bustling city of London and relocated to the desolate yet hauntingly beautiful British moorlands by her husband, Henry, who is driven by his professional aspirations. Unfortunately, Henry is far from an ideal partner, leaving Lenore yearning for genuine companionship and emotional connection. Just as her loneliness reaches a peak, the enigmatic Carmilla enters her life, igniting a whirlwind of desire and passionate longing.
Upon arrival, Carmilla is introduced to the household after a dramatic carriage accident, intended to recuperate but soon overstays her welcome. Her peculiar habits—such as her penchant for late-night wanderings and her refusal to partake in meals—begin to create an atmosphere of discomfort among the residents. From the very moment Carmilla steps into Lenore’s life, she becomes an irresistible obsession, consuming Lenore’s thoughts day and night. Simultaneously, Lenore experiences unsettling dreams that blur the line between reality and fantasy, while an alarming illness begins to afflict young women in a nearby village. While these elements may seem familiar to fans of the original tale, Hungerstone significantly expands upon the themes of industrialization and the societal expectations placed upon women during this tumultuous era. It powerfully conveys feminine rage and offers readers some truly gratifying moments of rebellion and self-discovery.
