The Match No.1 of the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2022 was played between Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team and Mohammad Nabi-led Afghanistan National Cricket Team at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday, September 3.
Sri Lanka National Cricket Team defeated Afghanistan National Cricket Team by 4 wickets to take revenge for the group stage defeat and end the winning streak of Mohammad Nabi and Co. in the marquee tournament.

Earlier, the Lankan Lions won the toss, elected to bowl first in the game and they made no changes to the playing XI. On the other hand, Afghanistan National Cricket Team made one change to the team as Samiullah Shinwari replaced sick Azmatullah Omarzai.
Batting first, Afghanistan were off to a very good start as the openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai smashed 40 runs in the first 4 overs. Afghanistan lost their first wicket in the 5th over as Hazratullah Zazai was cleaned up by Dilshan Madushanka. At the end of the powerplay, Team Afghan were at 49/1.
Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Rahmanullah Gurbaz looked in brilliant touch and reached his half-century off 22 balls and after 10 overs Afghanistan were at 83/1.
Gurbaz was dismissed by Asitha Fernando in the 16th over of the match and he played an absolutely fantastic knock of 84 runs at a strike rate of 186.67 and his innings consisted of 4 fours and 6 sixes.
Also, Ibrahim Zadran (40) and Najibullah (17) made decent contributions with the bat. In the end, the Mohammad Nabi-led side were able to score 175 runs at the loss of 6 wickets.
Chasing the target, the Dasun Shanaka-led side were off to a flying start as the opening duo of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis batted brilliantly. At the end of the powerplay, Lankan Lions were at 57/0.
Naveen-ul-Haq provided his side with the first breakthrough by dismissing dangerous-looking Kusal Mendis, who scored 36 runs at a strike rate of 189.47, in the 7th over. Soon Mujeeb Ur Rahman sent back opener Pathum Nissanka, who scored 28-ball 35, in the 9th over.
Charith Asalanka once again failed to perform well with the bat in the ongoing Asia Cup as he was cleaned up for 8 by Mohammad Nabi in the 12th over. Captain Dasun Shanaka was able to make only a small contribution of 10 runs before being dismissed by Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the 15th over.
Also, Danushka Gunathilaka played a good 33-run knock before being castled by Rashid Khan in the 17th over. In the end, Bhanuka Rajapaksa (31) and Wanindu Hasaranga’s (16) brilliant power-hitting helped Sri Lanka clinch the victory.

Brilliant cricket from Sri Lanka! First, they made a good comeback with the ball to restrict Afghanistan to 175 runs after their fiery start and then batted beautifully throughout the chase. Well-deserved win. #AFGvSL #AsiaCup2022

That was an interesting contest…the last 5 overs of the AFG batting innings came back to haunt them at the end, they just made 37 runs losing 5 wickets in the last 5..10-15 more runs could have made the difference.
Well played SL 👏🏻👏🏻#AFGvSL #AsiaCup2022— Dr. Loose Tongue (@LooseTweeter) September 3, 2022

Wouldn’t mind Afghanistan beating India and Pakistan both if it ensures IND v AFG final. 🌝 #T20WorldCup

Sri Lanka were blown away in the first match.
Had Bangladesh not bowled those wides and no-balls, who knows what would have happened?
Even here, Gurbaz blazed away.
What a comeback.
I also love how they celebrate differently based on the opposition. 😐
— Abhishek Mukherjee (@ovshake42) September 3, 2022
Apart from Gurbaz, the other Afghanistan batters got 80 runs in 76 balls.

Cannot understand how Naveen ul Haq have managed to top the wicket charts in two Blast seasons which presents some of the flattest decks. Gets smashed by any half decent sides pretty much everywhere else he plays.

31 (14) walking in with 57 needed off 35 is gold.
