ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has become the latest major technology firm to resolve a lawsuit concerning social media addiction without going to trial, as reported by Bloomberg on Tuesday. This settlement allows TikTok to sidestep a potentially contentious jury trial that was set to take place later this month.
The specifics of the settlement are still under wraps and are considered confidential, according to Bloomberg.
Just last month, Google settled its involvement in this case. YouTube, a platform under Google, was one of the four social media services accused of fostering addiction. The other platforms, Snap’s Snapchat and Meta’s Instagram, are still facing legal proceedings in Los Angeles scheduled for July.
The lawsuit was initiated by a plaintiff, identified only by the initials R.K.C., a 15-year-old from Florida. R.K.C. claims to have developed an addiction to the four mentioned social media platforms starting at the age of eight. The allegations suggest that features such as autoplay and endless scrolling contributed to significant mental health issues stemming from this addiction.
Legal challenges related to safety are increasingly burdening social media companies. According to Bloomberg, there are currently over 3,000 active lawsuits asserting that social media products are harmful or addictive.
This situation became particularly pressing for Meta and Google in March. A New Mexico court ordered Meta to pay $375 million for allegedly deceiving the public regarding the safety of its platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Meta is currently appealing this ruling.
In a related decision that same week in Los Angeles, both Meta and Google were instructed to provide compensation to a 20-year-old woman who alleged that her addiction to social media led to mental health difficulties. At that time, a representative for Meta stated that the company was considering additional legal avenues, while Google announced its intention to appeal.
