TikTok Is Back and Bigger Than Ever

Spread the love

The popular social media platform TikTok is back in action, now available for download on both Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store in the United States. After a sudden disappearance on January 19, 2025, due to a nationwide ban, users can once again access the app. This abrupt ban raised questions about the platform’s future and its compliance with US regulations.

As discussions continue, it remains uncertain what the final outcome for TikTok will be. President Trump has expressed interest in negotiating a “deal” that would allow the app to continue operating in the US market. This deal could potentially include provisions that grant the US government a financial stake in the company, ensuring oversight and compliance with US laws.

It’s likely that this situation has created considerable frustration among competing social media platforms, which are closely watching the developments surrounding TikTok. The outcome of these negotiations could significantly impact the competitive landscape in the social media industry.

Apple

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, recently teased fans with an exciting announcement on Twitter, encouraging them to “get ready to meet the newest member of the family.” While the specific details about this upcoming product remain somewhat of a mystery, the reveal is set to take place on Wednesday, February 19, creating buzz and anticipation among Apple enthusiasts.

Amid speculation, many are focusing on the possible launch of a next-generation iPhone SE. However, Tim Cook’s tweet also featured an intriguing animated image of a glimmering Apple logo, suggesting the potential introduction of a second-generation AirTag. There have been persistent rumors about the possibility of Apple unveiling an updated tracker sometime this year, prompting excitement among fans of the Apple ecosystem.

Personally, I can attest to the transformative impact of AirTags in my daily life, especially in preventing the frustrating experience of getting locked out of my apartment on numerous occasions. As the launch date approaches, it will be fascinating to see what additional features a new tracker might bring to the table. One can only hope that it doesn’t incorporate AI functionalities.

The tech industry received shocking news as the anticipated love story of 2025 between two automotive giants, Honda and Nissan, has come to an unexpected end. The companies have officially terminated their merger plans, which, if successful, would have created a formidable entity with a net worth of approximately $50 billion, significantly altering the automotive landscape.

The Financial Times reported earlier this month that Honda proposed a new corporate structure, envisioning Nissan as a subsidiary under a “take it or leave it” proposal. In a surprising turn of events, Nissan opted to withdraw from the negotiations, bringing the merger discussions to a close.

A heartfelt thank you to all the early question-askers who reached out (connect with me at askmat(at)engadget.com), including a particularly timely inquiry regarding new Apple hardware. Matt Ali asked: What is the most cost-effective way to purchase an iPad, and which model should I consider in early 2025?

Rather than diving into my own research or consulting unreliable AI chatbots, I sought insights from our resident iPad expert and reviewer for the best guidance:

“Apple products are often perceived as high-end and pricey, but the company offers a treasure trove of high-quality refurbished devices that can save you a substantial amount of money. Personally, I’ve purchased numerous devices from there over the years, and I’ve never encountered any issues — everything appears in like-new condition and comes with the same warranty as a brand-new product.”

As of now, there are several attractive options available in Apple’s refurbished store for those seeking an iPad that is nearly on par with the latest models but at a more affordable price point. For those who desire the largest possible screen, you can consider a refurbished iPad Pro equipped with an M2 chip and 256GB of storage for just $979. This is a noteworthy consideration, especially when the latest 13-inch iPad Pro starts at $1299, making it an appealing option for artists seeking a spacious canvas.

If a large screen isn’t a necessity for you, then the refurbished iPad Air might be an ideal choice. Priced at $529, it offers an 11-inch display, M1 chip, and 256GB of storage — a $170 savings compared to the current M2 iPad Air of the same storage capacity. While there are refurbished versions of Apple’s standard iPad available, it’s often possible to find a brand-new model on sale on Amazon. Given the rumors surrounding a new basic iPad set to launch this spring, it may be best to hold off on purchasing this model for now.

If you’re considering options for increased storage or cellular connectivity, those upgrades are also available for an additional cost. Personally, I find that 256GB or 512GB provides the perfect balance for storage — with cloud solutions being so prevalent today, having excessive local storage doesn’t seem necessary.

Similarly, investing in cellular connectivity may not be justifiable unless you’re planning to use your iPad while traveling. Most of the time, you can easily tether your iPad to your smartphone for quick online access. However, should you desire these refurbished options, they are indeed available for your consideration.
