An experienced hacking group has boldly claimed responsibility for breaching the cloud servers of Rockstar Games. In a significant development, the game publisher has acknowledged the occurrence of a third-party data breach. The hacker group, known as ShinyHunters, is notorious for its involvement in numerous data breaches that have impacted major companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Ticketmaster. They issued a stark warning on their website, demanding that Rockstar either pay a ransom or face the consequences of leaking sensitive information. The breach was initially uncovered by Hackread and reported on by Cybersec Guru.
ShinyHunters has not disclosed specific details regarding the Rockstar data that was accessed. They have merely stated that the company has until April 14 to respond, or otherwise, they will proceed to leak the compromised information. This leak is anticipated to cause “several annoying (digital) problems” for the company. In a statement to Kotaku, Rockstar Games confirmed the breach, asserting that “a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach.” They emphasized that there was “no impact on our organization or our players,” assuring stakeholders of their security protocols.
Previously, Rockstar faced a significant hacking incident that resulted in the leak of extensive gameplay footage and various assets for Grand Theft Auto VI in 2022. This breach was particularly damaging and highlighted vulnerabilities in the company’s security measures. Following this, one of the young members of the Lapsus$ group, which was responsible for the leak, received a sentence of “indefinite hospitalization,” underscoring the serious legal consequences associated with cybercrime.
