As Stranger Things concluded earlier this year, the Duffer Brothers have been busy expanding their creative horizons as they pave their path beyond the Hawkins narrative. Following the successful launch of their co-produced suspenseful thriller, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, in collaboration with Haley Z. Boston, the duo is now partnering with Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews to present a fresh concept that channels the heart of Stranger Things but shifts the focus from the thrilling 1980s nostalgia to a more mature perspective.
The upcoming series, The Boroughs, features Alfred Molina in the role of Sam Cooper, a character who is apprehensive about relocating to what appears to be an idyllic retirement community nestled in the deserts of New Mexico. To Sam, this place represents surrendering to life’s monotony. However, as he begins to acclimate to this tranquil setting and engages with fellow residents, Sam discovers that The Boroughs conceal dark secrets, hinting at an existence filled with unexpected peril instead of the peaceful retreat he anticipated.
The cast boasts an impressive lineup of exceptional talent, including Alfre Woodard, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, Clark Peters, and Denis O’Hare, who join Molina to create a compelling ensemble. The atmosphere reflected in the initial trailer evokes strong comparisons to Stranger Things, even though The Boroughs appears to delve less into horror and more into mysterious realms filled with intrigue. With hints of otherworldly entities reminiscent of the infamous Roswell aliens, the Duffer Brothers’ involvement as producers signals their commitment to producing captivating content as they explore new narratives following the conclusion of Stranger Things.
Mark your calendars, as The Boroughs will be available on Netflix starting May 21.
