Testing Options to Hide Like Counts on Reels and Threads

Meta is actively enhancing user control over metric visibility on Instagram, currently testing a feature that allows users to hide view counts for Reels displayed on their profiles. Concurrently, on Threads, users are being given the option to conceal their Threads replies within the app itself. This dual initiative aims to empower users with more personalized control over their social media experience, aligning with ongoing trends in social media engagement and user preference management.

While these features serve different functions, they are both part of a larger effort to enable users to tailor their social media interactions. By allowing individuals to manage how their engagement is displayed, Meta is recognizing the evolving landscape of user expectations and the importance of personalizing social media experiences to foster a more comfortable and engaging environment.

Both initiatives are indicative of a significant shift in how social media platforms are measuring engagement. As shown in this image shared by app researcher Hammod Oh, the anticipated feature would allow users to disable the view count that appears at the bottom left corner of each Reels thumbnail. This change could encourage more users to explore a wider array of Reels instead of solely gravitating towards the most popular clips, potentially enhancing overall content discovery on the platform.

This could have a positive impact on user engagement, as it encourages viewers to browse through more Reels without the bias of view counts. While this might promote a broader appreciation of content, it could also challenge profile visitors’ ability to gauge the popularity of specific Reels, thereby altering their content consumption habits.

In a parallel development, Meta is also testing a feature on Threads that would allow users to completely hide their Threads replies from their profile. This option aims to streamline the presentation of user profiles, making it possible for only “Threads” and “Reposts” to be visible, depending on user preferences.

Since original posters will inevitably encounter those comments, this approach could dilute the perceived value of feedback and discourse on the platform.

Regardless of these considerations, both Instagram and Threads’ new features align with a broader movement towards enhancing user control, which began with Instagram’s optional like count displays introduced back in 2021. Recognizing that many users appreciated the choice to manage their visibility, Instagram opted for an optional setting rather than completely removing like counts for all users, reflecting its commitment to user agency.

“When you log into Twitter and see that follower count, it incentivizes you to chase that number. While this may have been relevant years ago, it is no longer the focus we should have. Instead, our priority should be on the quality of meaningful conversations we cultivate on the platform.”

Defining what constitutes ‘meaningful conversations’ remains a challenge, and no platform has definitively established a method for measuring them. Recently, Elon Musk echoed similar sentiments regarding X, emphasizing the importance of “unregretted user minutes” over easily manipulated metrics like likes and followers.

Thus, traditional data points such as followers and likes may hold less significance in the ever-evolving landscape of social media. In today’s environment, users increasingly depend on algorithmically curated feeds to discover content that resonates with them, reducing the necessity of following specific profiles to fill their feeds.

Consequently, Meta is encouraging creators to prioritize view counts instead, as the dynamics of gaining followers have shifted. Users are now more likely to engage by sharing content through direct messages rather than liking posts, making views and shares crucial for understanding audience engagement.

However, this shift also indicates a greater reliance on platform algorithms, which may limit creators’ control over building a portable audience. The recent Instagram test aims to explore the implications of removing view counts, albeit in a different context.

Ultimately, the focus on traditional metrics may be misaligned with the current state of social media.
