Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes is currently serving a reduced 9-year prison sentence, which has been decreased from the original 11 years and 3 months. This sentence follows her conviction for fraud and conspiracy in November 2022. The miniseries The Dropout, which premiered on Hulu in March 2022, provides viewers with a dramatic portrayal of how the disgraced biotechnology entrepreneur found herself behind bars. The series features Amanda Seyfried as Holmes and Naveen Andrews as Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, who co-founded the controversial blood-testing startup. While Holmes has become the public face of the scandal, her infamous black turtleneck reminiscent of Steve Jobs, Balwani has maintained a lower profile throughout the unfolding drama.

To gain a deeper understanding of the scandal, it’s crucial to explore the life of Sunny Balwani, the man whose involvement has been overshadowed by Holmes’s notoriety.
Discover the Background of Sunny Balwani, Co-Founder and Former COO of Theranos
As highlighted by The New York Times in November 2021, there is significantly less public knowledge about Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani compared to the extensive media coverage surrounding Elizabeth Holmes and her tenure at Theranos. This lack of information has left many curious about his personal and professional journey, especially in light of the company’s dramatic rise and fall.
“Sunny Balwani is an extraordinary person,” stated Jeff Coopersmith, Balwani’s attorney, in an interview with ABC News. Balwani’s story begins in Pakistan, where he was born into a Hindu family that faced severe challenges, prompting their relocation to India due to religious persecution. Upon arriving in the United States, he expressed immense gratitude and began his academic journey at the University of Texas, earning a degree in computer science. His life has been characterized by relentless hard work, and according to Coopersmith, Balwani is regarded as one of the most dedicated individuals the attorney has ever encountered.
Sunny Balwani’s Path in Technology Before Joining Theranos
Prior to collaborating with Holmes to establish Theranos—a company that claimed to revolutionize the blood testing industry by enabling tests using only a few drops of blood—Balwani had already made his mark in the technology sector. According to The New York Times, he held the position of Northern California sales manager for Microsoft. In the wake of the early dot-com boom, he joined a startup named CommerceBid.com, which focused on creating competitive platforms for suppliers.
CommerceBid.com successfully developed innovative platforms that facilitated supplier competition, ultimately driving costs down. The success of this startup led to its acquisition by Commerce One for a staggering $225 million. Following the burst of the dot-com bubble, Balwani reportedly netted around $40 million from this deal. After a brief hiatus for further education, he assumed the role of chief operating officer at Theranos, where his journey would take a dramatic turn.

Legal Troubles: Sunny Balwani Indicted Alongside Elizabeth Holmes
In June 2018, both Holmes and Balwani faced indictment on serious federal wire fraud charges related to a multi-million dollar scheme aimed at defrauding investors, as reported by CNN. Despite their legal challenges, both individuals pleaded not guilty to the charges. In January 2022, a jury found Holmes guilty on four out of eleven charges, including one count of conspiracy to defraud investors and three counts of wire fraud concerning specific investors. Fortunately for her, she was acquitted on three charges related to defrauding patients and one conspiracy charge, although the jury was unable to reach a verdict on three remaining counts.
Holmes’s sentencing was originally set for September 2022; however, it was delayed as Balwani had yet to stand trial for his alleged involvement. Balwani faced serious accusations as well, with two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud pending against him.

Balwani’s legal defense team argued for his innocence, claiming he did not profit financially from his time at Theranos, even incurring significant personal losses during that period.
“In over 28 years of practicing law, as both a federal prosecutor and a defense attorney, I have never seen a case like this one, where the government brings a criminal prosecution against a defendant who obtained no financial benefit and lost millions of dollars of his own money,” emphasized Jeffrey Coopersmith in an interview with Vanity Fair. “Mr. Balwani committed no crimes. He did not defraud Theranos investors, who were among the most sophisticated in the world. He did not defraud consumers but instead worked tirelessly to empower them with access to their own health information.”
Allegations of Abuse: Elizabeth Holmes Accuses Sunny Balwani
During her highly publicized testimony, Holmes recounted her initial meeting with Balwani in the summer before she enrolled at Stanford, at the age of 18, while he was nearly two decades older and married. Their romantic relationship developed as they built Theranos together. However, Holmes also made serious accusations against Balwani, alleging sexual assault and controlling behavior throughout their relationship, details that were reported by the Washington Post. Balwani has categorically denied these allegations.
In a February 2025 interview with PEOPLE, Holmes disclosed her experience of being raped at a college fraternity party. Currently, she is undergoing cognitive and behavioral therapy for PTSD, supervised by a psychiatrist, while serving her prison sentence. Additionally, Holmes is actively involved in providing counseling to fellow inmates who are survivors of sexual violence.
“I wish that I had left or recognized the abuse sooner. Understanding why I didn’t has been a journey,” Holmes reflected in her interview. “It can break a lot of people, but I have strived to rise above it as best I can.”
Personal Life: Sunny Balwani’s Previous Marriage
Sunny Balwani was previously married to Japanese artist Keiko Fujimoto. The couple resided in San Francisco before finalizing their divorce in 2002, marking a significant chapter in his personal life before his involvement with Theranos.
