The Complexities of On-Screen Relationships: When Co-Stars Don’t Get Along
On-screen relationships often appear harmonious in movies and television shows, but the reality behind the scenes can be starkly different. While some actors form close bonds and treat each other like family, others struggle to maintain a professional relationship. Spending countless hours together on set for long periods can lead to tension and conflict, making it challenging for co-stars to work together effectively. The pressure of performing while managing personal differences often complicates matters further, leading to memorable yet tumultuous interactions. Understanding these dynamics sheds light on the complexities of the entertainment industry and the human experience of collaboration.
From Julia Roberts to Miley Cyrus, many notable stars have had their share of conflicts with co-stars, testing their professional relationships to the limit. Thankfully, some of these feuds have been resolved over time, but it often required significant personal space and reflection after filming concluded. Co-stars of Sex and the City, Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, have been embroiled in a long-standing public feud that has captivated fans. While Sarah insists there is no animosity, Kim has openly discussed her grievances, which began with issues over pay disparity during the show’s original run. This underlying tension has made their interactions both on and off-screen particularly strained.
Despite a period of silence following the release of Sex and the City 2, speculation reignited when it became apparent that the third film would not proceed because Kim refused to participate. The media frenzy intensified as both actresses exchanged comments through interviews, culminating in a dramatic exchange where Sarah expressed condolences to Kim after the death of her brother, prompting a fierce response from Kim.
In a pointed Instagram post, Kim retorted, “My Mother asked me today ‘When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?’ Your constant reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you truly were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I am writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy to restore your ‘good girl’ persona.”
When the SATC reboot, And Just Like That…, was announced in 2021, Kim confirmed her decision not to return to the show, solidifying the rift between the two.

2. Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdams
While Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams developed a romantic relationship off-screen after filming The Notebook, they faced significant challenges during production. Director Nick Cassavetes revealed that there was a moment when Ryan asked to work with a different actress due to their difficult dynamic. This incident highlights the often tumultuous nature of on-set relationships.
“They were really not getting along one day on set. Not at all… Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this huge scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here.’ He was doing a scene with Rachel and said, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.’ We went into a room with a producer; they started screaming and yelling at each other,” Nick recounted to VH1.
Nick added that after the co-stars were able to vent their frustrations, they managed to get back on track and complete the film successfully.
3. Lea Michele & Naya Rivera
The Glee cast has recently become more vocal about their tumultuous relationship with co-star Lea Michele, but it was the late Naya Rivera who initially shed light on the behind-the-scenes drama. In her memoir, Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up, Naya recounted the tensions that arose as her character gained more prominence in the series.
“I think Rachel — erm, I mean Lea — didn’t like sharing the spotlight. Lea was much more sensitive, though, and it seemed like she blamed me for anything and everything that went wrong. If I complained about anyone or anything, she’d assumed I was b—ching about her. Soon, she started to ignore me, and eventually it got to the point where she didn’t say a word to me for all of season six,” she expressed.

4. Tyrese Gibson & Dwayne Johnson
It was evident that Fast and Furious 6 co-stars Tyrese Gibson and Dwayne Johnson did not see eye to eye when Tyrese took to Instagram to blame Dwayne for delaying an upcoming installment in the franchise. He even issued a threat to leave the film if Dwayne continued to be involved.
“Hello loyal followers and friends from OUR fast universe… I’m sorry to announce that if Dwayne is in Fast9, there will be no more Roman Pearce — You mess with family and my daughters’ survival, I mess with yours,” he expressed.
Although it was clear that there were underlying issues, it seems that Tyrese and Dwayne managed to resolve their differences after a heartfelt conversation. Later, Tyrese conveyed his regret for airing their personal issues on social media.
5. Miley Cyrus & Emily Osment
Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment may have portrayed best friends on Hannah Montana, but their real-life relationship was far more complicated. Initially friends, their bond deteriorated over time, with Miley noting in her autobiography Miles To Go that their interactions often escalated into arguments.
“The show felt real to me, and I wanted my relationship with Lilly to feel real too. I knew it didn’t have to — show business is show business — but I was disappointed. There were times when I didn’t think we would ever be friends. We just couldn’t figure out how to get along,” Miley elaborated.
Eventually, Miley and Emily were able to work through their differences, and last year they reunited during Miley’s Instagram live series Bright Minded: Live with Miley, where Miley affectionately referred to Emily as her “badass best friend.”

6. Tom Hardy & Charlize Theron
Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron experienced significant friction while working on Mad Max: Fury Road, a situation made more intense by their characters’ confrontational dynamics. The challenging desert environment also contributed to the tension as they endured long hours together.
“Maybe the film is what it is because we struggled so much with one another, and those characters had to fight so much with each other. If we had been buddy-buddy, maybe the movie would have been 10 times worse,” Charlize reflected in a conversation with WSJ Magazine.
Their co-star Zoë Kravitz later noted that she believed the duo “weren’t vibing” due to the exhaustion, confusion, and homesickness they all felt on set, which only added to the strain of their working relationship.
7. Alex Pettyfer & Channing Tatum
Alex Pettyfer and Channing Tatum experienced tension on the set of Magic Mike, with Alex acknowledging that much of the friction may have been his own doing. Although their feud wasn’t as bad as reported, Alex stated that Channing “doesn’t like” him, stemming from concerns about Alex possibly being a liability due to past behavior on set.
“I didn’t speak on the film [set]. I was scared to speak. I did my work and then I sat in the corner and listened to music because I’d been told that anything I did was wrong by my reps, and I was very insecure as a human being. That also gave me a bad rep because they said, ‘Oh Alex thinks he’s f–king better than everybody else because he doesn’t talk to anyone.’ And that’s not true. I was genuinely nervous and scared to be myself,” Alex explained to THR.
To complicate matters, Channing later found himself in the middle of a landlord dispute involving Alex, who was reportedly refusing to pay rent. Alex now admits that he probably should have simply settled the issue rather than creating further complications.
8. Jennifer Aniston & Jay Mohr
Jennifer Aniston and Jay Mohr starred together in the 1997 film Picture Perfect, but their off-screen dynamic was less than ideal. In an interview, Jay suggested that Jennifer was not particularly kind to him during filming, which added to the tension on set.
