John Amos tragically passed away in August, yet it was more than a month before his son Kelly Christopher publicly announced the news. In the aftermath of this heart-wrenching loss, the actor’s daughter, Shannon Amos, has taken significant steps to investigate the circumstances surrounding her father’s death. She has engaged a lawyer to spearhead her efforts in uncovering the truth about his passing, raising questions about the care her father received during his final days.
“The family deserves to know the full circumstances surrounding Mr. Amos’ care and the events that led to his passing,” stated Shannon Amos’ lawyer. “We are committed to pursuing all available avenues to ensure that these questions are answered.”
Despite Shannon’s proactive stance, Kelly asserts that there is no need for conflict, and a private investigator has reported finding no evidence of “foul play” concerning the actor’s death. This article delves into the unfolding sibling dispute and sheds light on the latest developments in this family drama.
K.C. Amos Addresses Sister’s Serious Elder Abuse Claims
As previously noted, K.C. revealed their father’s passing on October 1, despite John having died on August 21. He explained that the beloved ‘Good Times’ star succumbed to congestive heart failure in Los Angeles at the age of 84.
Shannon’s attorney, James H. Davis III, has confirmed that she has sought legal assistance to investigate her father’s death further. She has leveled serious accusations of elder abuse against her brother, marking a troubling pattern in their relationship. Shannon has expressed a need for clarity regarding her father’s admission to Centinela Hospital and his condition upon arrival. She claims that someone impersonating her had deceived hospital staff during his admission. Despite submitting three formal requests for his medical records, Shannon states she has received no response.
Furthermore, she has requested the LAPD and Adult Protective Services provide summaries of their investigations concerning her past allegations of abuse regarding John Amos, which adds another layer of complexity to this family dispute.
In response, Kelly Christopher has been quick to counter his sister’s allegations, providing evidence to support his claims. He explained to PEOPLE the rationale behind decisions made before John Amos’ passing, asserting that John specifically chose to go to Centinela Hospital due to his trust in its medical team. Additionally, he revealed that his father requested he not contact other family members during this time, a request that K.C. claims he respected and adhered to.
“Let me be clear and transparent. There has been no physical, financial, emotional, or psychological elder abuse or neglect committed against my father by me, Gene Brummett, or Belinda Foster,” K.C. stated. “This has been documented by an independent investigation by Homeland Security Services, Inc, Adult Protective Services, and other law enforcement agencies. The reality is that he passed of natural causes at the age of 84 years old. Stop making it more than what it is.”
Kelly also engaged a defense investigator to conduct a thorough “comprehensive two-year investigation” into various financial discrepancies, including missing funds and stolen property from his father in multiple locations, including Colorado, Memphis, New Jersey, and Los Angeles. The investigator, Kevin Faler, reported that all charges against Kelly Christopher in New Jersey have been dismissed, further affirming K.C.’s position.
“The current allegations regarding foul play and elder abuse are frivolous,” stated Kevin Faler. “John Amos was happy working and spending time with [K.C., Gene, and Belinda], writing, producing, and praying with them as a family and as his team. John passed from natural causes at the age of 84 years old. There was no foul play.”
Faler also cleared John Amos’ long-time manager, Belinda Foster, of any alleged misconduct, stating, “John told me Belinda was more of a daughter to him than his own biological daughter,” as reported to PEOPLE.
Shannon Previously Raised Concerns About Her Father’s Well-Being
Shannon Amos’ concerns about her father’s well-being surfaced over a year prior when she accused him of being a victim of elder abuse and financial exploitation. She claimed he was hospitalized in critical condition and made these allegations public through a GoFundMe campaign, stating that John had reached out to her from a hospital in Memphis. While she did not specify the individuals involved in the alleged abuse, she mentioned that one of them was a caregiver. The GoFundMe campaign aimed to raise $500,000 for legal expenses, care, and aftercare related to her father’s situation.
In a surprising turn, John Amos later refuted his daughter’s claims in a video recorded from his hospital bed. He expressed confusion regarding the fundraising efforts and implied that if there were any abuse involved, it could potentially be attributed to Shannon herself. He referenced ongoing issues in their relationship leading up to his hospitalization, suggesting that his daughter had taken advantage of him.
“She would be the primary suspect — if you would,” John stated. “I don’t know if that’s the right term to use or not. But she’s the one that I would attribute my elderly abuse to. It’s definitely a case of elderly abuse.”
In addition to these claims, his manager Belinda explained that his hospitalization was a result of heart issues caused by fluid retention in his lower body and abdomen. However, both John and Belinda have denied that his medical condition was life-threatening, attempting to clarify the severity of the situation.
As of now, Shannon Amos has not publicly commented on her brother’s rebuttal regarding her investigation into their father’s death.
