The Magic City Classic in Alabama experienced a tragic incident following reports of gunfire in the vicinity of the highly anticipated HBCU football celebration. Originally designed to be a weekend celebrating school spirit, friendly competition, and community festivities, the event took a grave turn. Multiple individuals sustained injuries, and one person lost their life in a shooting that is currently under investigation.

Nine Individuals Reported Injured Near Magic City Classic
The Birmingham Police Department responded promptly, arriving shortly after 7:50 p.m. local time on Saturday, October 31, to reports of multiple gunshot victims in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue, close to Legion Field, where the Magic City Classic was ongoing. Police confirmed that nine individuals had been struck by gunfire. Tragically, one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and another was reported to be in critical condition. Meanwhile, seven other victims were stabilized and reported to be in stable condition.
Large Crowds Gathered for Football Event as Police Provide Shooting Details
The Magic City Classic, showcasing a rivalry between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, is celebrated as the largest HBCU football classic in the nation, attracting around 200,000 participants and 60,000 attendees annually. Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett shared with reporters that the shooting appears to involve two distinct parties, labeling the event as two separate acts of violence.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this tragedy,” Pickett stated. “…I am thankful that more people were not harmed, especially considering the large crowd present and families in attendance. This incident occurred post-game, and for the most part, it was away from the main venue,” he added.
Authorities Seize Multiple Weapons As Investigation Into Fatal Shooting Continues
Law enforcement confirmed the recovery of multiple firearms at the scene. One individual was detained and taken to Birmingham Police Headquarters for further questioning. Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the detained person, the victims, or any potential suspects. The motive behind the shooting is still unclear. The Birmingham Police Department is actively pursuing ongoing investigations.
