Social media plays a crucial role in modern marketing strategies. It enables brands to connect with consumers directly, offering valuable insights into their opinions on products and brand initiatives.

According to research from Sprout Social, 93% of industry professionals view social media as a vital tool for gathering consumer data, yet only 36% utilize it consistently for decisions beyond marketing. This gap creates data silos, hindering essential insights from reaching the appropriate departments.

“It’s important to recognize that consumer discussions occur continuously, 24/7, but many organizations struggle to process this information effectively,” remarked Brittany Hennessy, vice president of social intelligence evangelism at Sprout Social. “Social teams often identify valuable insights but face challenges in communicating these to the relevant departments.”

Sprout Social’s report, “The Intelligence Gap,” is based on feedback from 705 social media professionals across the U.S., U.K., and Australia. Data was gathered by Panoplai between February 20 and March 16.

How to Navigate the Vast Ocean of Social Media Data

While social media is rich with consumer insights, effectively gathering and applying this data can be challenging. Sifting through the vast amount of information to pinpoint actionable insights can be a daunting task. Often, negative feedback from a small group can overshadow positive sentiments and distort brand image. This is where artificial intelligence can help by filtering out irrelevant noise.

“In times of crisis, brands tend to respond broadly,” Hennessy explained. “This can exacerbate the situation; sometimes, the best response is to take no action.”

Improper use of consumer data can lead to significant missteps for marketers. A survey revealed that 33% of respondents felt their organizations failed to respond to or recognized cultural shifts in the past 12-24 months due to poor utilization of consumer insights. 31% reported missing early indicators of shifting consumer preferences, 26% escalated customer issues that could have been addressed sooner, 24% delayed necessary product or messaging adjustments, and 21% lost market share to competitors.

Despite these missed opportunities, social intelligence has the potential to deliver insights more rapidly than traditional research methods, with 74% of respondents indicating they receive quicker insights through social media.

Still, confidence in utilizing social intelligence remains low. Only 17% of respondents expressed feeling “extremely confident” that their organizations fully leverage social intelligence. This figure rises to 43% among owners or founders but drops to just 10% for individual contributors. Among directors and above, 25% feel assured that their organization maximizes social data, while only 13% of managers share this confidence. 23% of respondents believe their organizations view social media as merely a communication channel rather than a tool for data collection.

Who is Responsible for Social Intelligence?

Ownership of measurement and transparency in data usage remains a significant focus in the marketing sector. The integration of social intelligence could complicate matters further, with 13% of respondents noting that departmental silos prevent social media data from informing strategic decisions.

Determining accountability for social intelligence also poses a challenge. The survey revealed that 29% of organizations attribute this responsibility to their social media teams. Other departments involved include data and analytics (17%), broader marketing teams (15%), communications (10%), insights and research (10%), corporate strategy (9%), and product teams (5%). Just 6% of respondents indicated that social intelligence is a shared responsibility across departments.

The use of social data diminishes outside marketing departments. Sixty-two percent of marketing teams and 41% of customer experience teams actively utilize social media data. 29% of corporate strategy teams, 28% of product teams, 18% of research and development teams, and 15% of investor relations also employ this data.

“I don’t believe we’re facing a measurement crisis,” Hennessy stated. “The real issue lies in translation. We have an abundance of information, but it’s unclear how to apply it. We collect metrics, but their significance is often lost. Without context, data loses its value.”
