Sheep Employed by Volkswagen at Polish Solar Farm

Volkswagen has introduced an unusual yet innovative workforce at its manufacturing facility in Poznań, Poland. A flock of 100 sheep is now grazing at the solar farm that supplies energy to the plant. According to Electrek, these sheep are not just replacing traditional lawn mowers; they are also part of an extensive research initiative focused on agrivoltaics. This approach explores the coexistence of agriculture and solar energy production, creating a mutually beneficial relationship.

The Poznań University of Life Sciences is spearheading the study of this sheep flock, aiming to understand the effects of grazing on various factors including animal welfare, biodiversity, soil health, vegetation growth, and the local microclimate. Marzena Pillich-Grońska, the director of Volkswagen Poznań, highlighted the farm’s role, stating, “Today, the photovoltaic farm delivers much more than green electricity. It has also become a place that supports biodiversity, local agriculture, and scientific research.
