When considering the top-rated robot vacuums specifically designed for pet owners, many people focus primarily on their ability to effectively pick up pet hair from various surfaces, such as carpets, and the convenient self-emptying feature that can be particularly beneficial for those with allergies. However, there’s a revolutionary feature emerging in the latest models that greatly enhances the experience for pet parents — and it doesn’t involve the vacuum’s suction power. This innovative capability is the option to monitor your home through a livestream camera integrated into the front of the robot vacuum, which has quickly become one of my favorite aspects across all the robot vacuums I’ve had the chance to test.

This feature resonates deeply with both meticulous pet owners who seek cleanliness and those who experience anxiety about their pets’ well-being when away from home — I can only assume this demographic is quite significant. If your instincts as a concerned pet parent kick in as soon as you step out the door, investing in a robot vacuum with this livestream capability could provide more peace of mind than opting for a traditional stick vacuum. The key difference lies in that while a cordless vacuum operates in your absence, the robot vacuum remains on guard, equipped with a camera that allows you to see a live feed of your home as it works, offering a dynamic way to monitor your environment compared to a stationary pet camera.

Many advanced robot vacuums featuring livestream cameras also offer the capability for remote control viewing. This allows users to direct the vacuum’s movement using on-screen arrows, effectively guiding it in a desired direction. For instance, with the Roborock Saros Z70, users can even control its robotic arm to pick up small obstacles, resembling a claw machine — though this level of precision can be challenging to manage in practice. Nevertheless, the ability to steer a robot vacuum while it captures footage can be invaluable, especially when trying to approach a pet that may be startled by the noise of the machine.
Although I find myself checking in on my cats almost every time I’m away, their activities usually don’t provide much excitement. I often catch glimpses of them wandering around or approaching the vacuum with a look that says, “Mom, I see you,” but they tend to retreat to higher ground, where the vacuum can’t reach them. However, for those pets that are prone to hiding under beds or furniture, the mobile floor-level camera can provide much-needed reassurance regarding your pet’s whereabouts, alleviating some of the anxiety associated with leaving them alone.

Beyond pet monitoring, the integrated camera also allows you to connect with other humans in your household. Most of these robot vacuums come equipped with a video call feature that facilitates two-way audio communication. This means you can easily reach out to anyone at home — be it house sitters, children, or even the dog walker from services like Rover. The best part is that the recipient doesn’t need to “answer” the call; the connection is automatically established, making it convenient to check in. I’ve personally utilized this feature to reach out to my roommate after she missed my calls on her mobile phone, which was on silent.
Mashable Trend Report
My experience with the livestream cameras in premium Roborock vacuums like the Roborock Saros 10 and Saros 10R has been particularly enjoyable. These models boast a superior image quality with minimal graininess, and the “search for the pet” feature is simply delightful. This functionality can be especially useful for pet owners who are unable to devote time to monitoring the vacuum’s cleaning process in every room, all while hoping to catch a glimpse of their furry friend.

Interestingly, onboard cameras are no longer exclusive to high-end robot vacuums priced over $1,000. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the 3i G10+, an affordable robot vacuum that impressed me with its efficient small obstacle avoidance and remote viewing capabilities.
Can you use a robot vacuum camera for actual security purposes?
As a fan of horror movies, particularly the found footage genre, I’ve often envisioned creative concepts for low-budget, contemporary paranormal shorts where a robot vacuum camera captures various household items moving unexpectedly in the dark. However, I suspect that this would not be very successful, likely earning a dismal rating of around 14 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite its intriguing premise, the concept wouldn’t function well as a thriller. As clever as it may seem, a robot vacuum camera is not particularly effective for covertly capturing real-time events. Each time you activate the live view mode, the vacuum audibly announces “remote viewing activated,” and similarly, it makes an announcement when the live viewing is disabled. This notification plays loudly, even if you have muted the vacuum’s smart assistant or dock volume settings.

Moreover, this means that the cameras are not continuously recording while they are in operation or keeping watch around the clock while charging. Every robot vacuum equipped with a camera that I have tested requires a PIN code or an unlocking pattern, which involves connecting dots in a specific sequence. I’ve had friends express concerns about whether a random individual could spy through your robot vacuum if your phone were to be stolen. However, much like accessing a locked smartphone or a smart doorbell, any potential intruder would need to know the specific passcode for the robot vacuum app, which is not automatically the same as the one used for your phone.
