Reaching Alpha Centauri: A Startup’s $15 Million Vision

A Seattle-based nonprofit is making strides toward an extraordinary goal: launching a spacecraft aimed at the nearest star system. Their vision involves being pioneers in departure while accepting a lengthy journey to reach their destination.

This week, the Fermi Explorer Mission unveiled an ambitious plan to dispatch a small probe to Alpha Centauri by 2029. Despite the probe potentially taking up to 80,000 years to arrive at this star system located 4.4 light-years away, the mission is driven by a bold vision.

Philip Johnston, the co-founder and president of the initiative, hopes this long voyage will ignite future generations’ imaginations, motivating them to explore faster methods of interstellar travel. “We aspire to be both the first to depart and the last to arrive at Alpha Centauri,” he expressed in a statement.

Launching Toward the Stars

This is not the first endeavor targeting Alpha Centauri. In 2016, tech entrepreneur Yuri Milner initiated a $100 million project aimed at reaching the star system in 20 years with a fleet of light-driven nanocrafts. This initiative, named Breakthrough Starshot, currently lacks a confirmed launch date.

In contrast, Fermi Explorer plans to utilize a reliable solar electric propulsion system to gradually accelerate the spacecraft. “We wanted to avoid a repeat of Breakthrough Starshot. Our focus is firmly on executing an actual launch,” Johnston shared with MIT Technology Review. “We are not limited to achieving this within a human lifetime; our goal is to find a feasible way to reach another star.”

To facilitate the journey to Alpha Centauri, the team is leveraging a mission design created by Physical Superintelligence, an AI-driven physics research lab. After launch, the spacecraft will spend approximately 12 years orbiting the Sun, employing the star’s gravitational pull to gain speed through a series of burn maneuvers. Upon reaching its designated escape velocity, it will slingshot out of the solar system, commencing its interstellar voyage.

“None of us will witness the conclusion of this journey, and that’s intentional,” Johnston stated. “This mission represents the first achievable step, aiming to motivate future generations to continuously push the boundaries we have inherited.”

Is Interstellar Travel Within Reach?

Creating a viable interstellar mission requires extensive planning and cannot be approached lightly. So far, the only two spacecraft to escape the solar system are Voyager 1 and 2, which are now traversing deeper into interstellar space without a specific destination.

As the farthest human-made object, Voyager 1 travels at an astonishing speed of about 37,844 miles per hour (60,903 km/h) and has journeyed around 15.95 billion miles (25.67 billion kilometers) since its launch in 1977. In comparison, Alpha Centauri is situated roughly 25 trillion miles (40 trillion kilometers) from Earth.

Fermi Explorer’s aspirations are undeniably ambitious. The team asserts that the entire mission will be executed for under $15 million, covering the design and construction of the spacecraft.

If successful, the spacecraft will carry a payload of at least 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) housed within a shielded 4 by 4 by 4 inch box (10 by 10 by 10 centimeters). Fermi Explorer plans to initiate a three-month solicitation period for scientific and artistic payloads to be included in its journey to Alpha Centauri. The mission will also feature a digitized version of the Voyager mission’s Golden Record, along with messages from children globally.

“The most motivating aspect of this mission is that individuals don’t have to wait for approval or ideal conditions,” Garrett Jameson, a former U.S. Air Force officer who will manage daily operations, remarked. “We can embrace the limitations, create what is feasible now, and provide future generations with something significant to build upon.”
