Occasionally, the 2017 Power Rangers film crosses your mind. Despite initial skepticism regarding its potential, the movie’s execution proved to be surprisingly enjoyable, primarily due to its authentic and relatable cast. The blend of youthful energy and character depth helped the film resonate with audiences, making it a memorable addition to the franchise.
Nearly ten years have passed since its release, and while Hollywood has shifted its focus elsewhere, Dacre Montgomery, who portrayed Jason, continues to reflect on the film’s unrealized potential. In a recent interview with Movieweb at the Faces of Death premiere, he disclosed that Lionsgate had grand ambitions for the Power Rangers reboot, offering the cast a lucrative four-movie deal. Before its release, the studio envisioned a series of approximately seven films, fueled by excitement over a post-credits scene that hinted at the iconic Tommy Oliver making an appearance in future storylines.
For Lionsgate, the vision was clear: they aimed for Power Rangers to become their flagship franchise, akin to the success of The Hunger Games, establishing a reliable tentpole intellectual property. However, following the film’s disappointing box office performance, the dream began to fade. Although it achieved success in terms of merchandising and home release, the theatrical revenue fell short of expectations, failing to justify further investment in sequels, as Montgomery noted. Discussions about a potential sequel lingered, but in 2019, he shared that plans were underway for a different reboot, which would not include the original cast.
Fast forward a few years, and anticipation grows for a new reboot set to premiere on Disney+. Fans and cast members alike await developments in this exciting project, with Montgomery expressing his enthusiasm. “Power Rangers holds significant meaning for many fans,” he remarked. “I am confident that those who take on these roles will do an incredible job. Personally, I had a fantastic experience working on the film.”
