The United Airlines flight was en route to Shanghai, China, having departed from Los Angeles at approximately 2 p.m. Just two hours into the flight, one of the pilots realized that his passport was still in the U.S., which necessitated an immediate return.
The flight was diverted to San Francisco International Airport, landing around 5 p.m. local time. At that point, there were approximately 270 individuals on board, comprising 257 passengers and 13 crew members. After touching down in San Francisco, a new flight crew boarded the plane, and the airline continued its journey to China, albeit about six hours later than scheduled.
“The pilot did not have their passport onboard,” United Airlines confirmed in a statement to CNN. “We arranged for a new crew to take our customers to their destination that evening.”
Furthermore, the airline mentioned that it provided its passengers with “meal vouchers and compensation” for the inconvenience caused by the delay.

Yang went a step further by lodging a complaint through United Airlines’ official website, and the company has promised a response within 14 days.
