OpenAI stopped five covert influence operations in the last three months

According to a new report from the platform’s threat detection group, the platform found and terminated 5 accounts engaging in covert influence operations, such as propaganda-laden bots, social media scrubbers, and fake post generators.

Terminated accounts involve these behind a Russian Telegram operation dubbed “Undesirable Grammar” and these facilitating Israeli corporation STOIC. STOIC was found to be employing OpenAI models to create articles and comments praising Israel’s present military siege, that have been then posted across Meta platforms, X, and far more.

OpenAI says the group of covert actors have been employing a wide variety of tools for a “variety of tasks, such as creating quick comments and longer articles in a variety of languages, producing up names and bios for social media accounts, conducting open-supply investigation, debugging easy code, and translating and proofreading texts.”
