Looking to add something fresh to your reading list? This week, we highly recommend Of the Earth, an exciting new miniseries from Image Comics, created by writers Chris Condon (That Texas Blood, News from the Fallout) and Andrew Ehrich, accompanied by artist Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead), with lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou and design by Mike Tivey.

This series is off to a thrilling start. The debut issue of Of the Earth immediately immerses readers in its rich folklore, beginning with a captivating excerpt from a book about a legendary creature known as the Wildcatter. This enigmatic being is described as having a human visage but an “amorphous” body, blending both humanoid and animalistic traits, complete with elongated limbs and horns. Its oily nature contributes to its unsettling presence, with local lore linking it to the “wildcat” wells where desperate individuals sought oil.

The narrative then shifts to Tabby, a young girl we encounter at a truck stop phone booth, escaping a troubling home life with a box of cash in her possession. As detailed: “Tabitha ‘Tabby’ Black flees a tumultuous past to return to her tranquil hometown of Solitude, Texas, seeking refuge in her Grandmother’s home where she was raised. the notion of home has changed… and so has her Grandmother.” The initial issue sets a raw, gritty atmosphere for the unfolding tale, subtly foreshadowing the violence and desolation that awaits Tabby in the oil-rich terrain. This gripping storyline has certainly captivated my interest, and I can’t wait for the next issue, set to release on June 17.
