According to reports from the NYPD, emergency personnel swiftly responded to calls about a distressed woman shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Body-camera footage revealed a woman precariously perched on the bridge’s ledge. Some viewers may find the footage unsettling.
As an NYPD officer, secured by a safety cable, approached her, he engaged her in conversation, offering his assistance.
“My name is Chris. What’s your name?” he asked. “What’s going on today? I want to talk to you and help you. That’s why I’m here. I truly care.”
The officer continued to implore her not to jump and to allow him to assist her.
”It’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” he explained. “I can’t imagine what you’re facing, but I want to learn more. We have resources available to support you. Accepting help is the strongest action you can take right now. I assure you, it’s the bravest choice.”
NYPD Officer Engaged in Conversation for Nearly an Hour Prior to the Rescue
The officer reportedly spent close to an hour conversing with the woman, patiently waiting for a suitable opportunity to pull her back from the ledge.
“NYPD ESU officers scaled the Brooklyn Bridge to reach a woman in crisis who was threatening to jump,” a statement from Police 1 reported. “For nearly an hour, they engaged with her, listened to her, and waited for the right moment to safely bring her back from the brink.”
As darkness fell, several rescuers approached the woman, who was gripping the bridge with one arm. Just as she seemed about to let go, one officer quickly wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her to safety.
”Don’t do it,” he urged. “Please don’t do it. I’ve got you. You’re going to be alright. You’re not in any trouble.”
