io9 had the unique opportunity to participate in the immersive Nosferatu Experience, a captivating journey into the eerie realm of the forthcoming Focus Features film directed by Robert Eggers, known for his work on The Lighthouse. This chilling, vampire-themed walk-through was a limited engagement orchestrated by Jon Braver, the Director of Immersive at Thirteenth Floor Entertainment, who also led the creative team behind the acclaimed interactive play series Delusion. Attendees were spellbound as they stepped into a world that masterfully blended cinema with visceral, real-world experiences.
Held from December 16-18 at the iconic Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, this evening event transformed the Masonic Lodge into the foreboding manor of Count Orlok, portrayed by Bill Skarsgård in Eggers’ adaptation. Attendees were invited on a moody tour of his estate, where they engaged in mysterious business dealings amidst the chilling atmosphere. The immersive experience was further enhanced by a haunting soundscape crafted by the film’s composer, Robin Carolan, enveloping guests in the eerie essence of Nosferatu and creating a truly unforgettable ambiance.
Curiosity piqued? A tour of such an otherworldly experience seemed entirely safe at first glance—after all, what harm could come from exploring a collection of authentic screen-used props, intricate costumes, and occult artifacts steeped in dark magic? The allure of the experience was irresistible, drawing in fans of horror and cinema alike, eager to delve deeper into the shadowy world of vampires and the mysteries they hold.
However, the Nosferatu Experience was far more than just an exhibit; it was a living tapestry woven with the contributions of actors who fully embraced the gothic ambiance of the film. They engaged with guests in ways that echoed the haunting narrative, insisting I sign a contract from Orlok’s enigmatic associate—despite its indecipherable language. With both excitement and trepidation, I signed it, driven by my insatiable curiosity about all things vampire, particularly that coveted Nosferatu coffin. I was determined to overlook any ominous warnings, even when voiced by plague-ridden figures and pious maidens.
The Nosferatu Experience served as a “lite” iteration of the renowned Delusion team’s annual interactive haunt plays, which typically prohibit video recording. For those intrigued by their unique productions, this event offered a tantalizing glimpse into the captivating world of immersive theater on the West Coast. During the experience, we captured the unsettling essence of the film through our cameras as we navigated through dimly lit corridors, witnessing elements of the plot unfold without much context, including mildly graphic depictions of black magic rituals and the palpable sense of dread surrounding artifacts like Orlok’s coffin and sinister tomes of dark magic.
As I ventured deeper into the experience, I observed two women gripped by unhinged terror, their eyes wide as they beheld the shadow of the vampire looming ominously on the walls, intensifying the madness of the plague victims. With the ink now dry on my contract, I felt compelled to confront my fate as I approached the Count. What transpired in those moments remains a blur in my memory, but I was left with two peculiar puncture marks on my neck and an uncanny aversion to bright light. Focus Features, I eagerly await the arrival of my Nosferatu coffin bed!

The highly anticipated film Nosferatu is set to make its theatrical debut on December 25, captivating audiences with its chilling narrative.
