Exciting All-Woman Spacewalk Set to Enhance the International Space Station’s Operations
In a groundbreaking event, two NASA astronauts are preparing for an important mission of orbital maintenance beyond the confines of the International Space Station (ISS). This extraordinary event marks a rare occurrence of an all-woman spacewalk, showcasing the significant contributions of women in the field of space exploration.
NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers are scheduled to embark on their spacewalk this Thursday at 8 a.m. ET. They will exit the space station for a meticulously planned duration of six hours and 35 minutes. Enthusiasts can catch the live broadcast of this historic spacewalk on NASA+ and the agency’s official YouTube channel. Additionally, viewers can access the live feed embedded below to witness this incredible journey in real time.
During this ambitious spacewalk, the astronauts will focus on critical tasks including the relocation of a communications antenna aboard the ISS. They will also install a mounting bracket in preparation for the upcoming installation of additional ISS Rollout Solar Arrays, commonly referred to as IROSA. These new solar arrays are engineered to enhance the power generation capacity of the ISS by up to 30%, which translates to an increase in the station’s total available power from 160 kilowatts to a remarkable 215 kilowatts, according to NASA. Furthermore, the duo will upgrade the station’s power systems while securely tethered to the ISS.
To date, astronauts have successfully completed five all-women spacewalks outside the ISS. The inaugural event occurred nearly six years ago, following several delays caused by a spacesuit that did not fit properly. Finally, on October 18, 2019, NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir made history by stepping outside the ISS, a significant milestone that underscored the critical role of women in spaceflight. Earlier this year, Suni Williams, another distinguished NASA astronaut, set a new record for total spacewalking time among women after completing a 5.5-hour spacewalk, bringing her cumulative spacewalking time to an impressive 62 hours and six minutes.
This upcoming spacewalk will mark the first time astronaut Nichole Ayers has ventured outside the ISS for extravehicular activity, while this will be astronaut Anne McClain’s third spacewalk, adding to her experience and contributions to human space exploration.
