As the iconic Muppets continue to enhance their presence within Disney Parks, these cherished characters from the Jim Henson Company are simultaneously celebrating their remarkable 70-year anniversary alongside Disneyland. Recognizing this significant milestone, Disney Experiences and Muppet Studios have joined forces to create a unique and engaging show that seamlessly aligns with the festivities taking place across the Disneyland Resort.
During the premiere of the Muppets’ special greeting before the inaugural performance of World of Color: Happiness, a breathtaking nighttime water spectacle at Disney California Adventure, io9 was in attendance. Prior to the show, key representatives and production teams from Disney Experiences discussed the exciting new collaboration that brings Disney and Henson together in a creative partnership.
“Well, there’s a lot of hijinks I can tell you that for sure,” remarked Susanna Tubert, the creative director of Disney Live Entertainment. “However, it soon became clear that the Muppets are also celebrating their 70th anniversary. So when we reached out to our partners at Muppet Studios and asked, ‘Hey, do the Muppets want to join us?’ the answer was a resounding yes.”
Tubert continued, “I will share that Miss Piggy had numerous requests, particularly concerning her wardrobe. There are several special outfits that may have been crafted just for her. Gonzo got into all sorts of mischief [and] and things spiraled from there, but we had an absolute blast.”
The Muppets’ pre-show moment before World of Color showcases delightful Muppet Show-style antics, as they entertain audiences with playful instructions on how to enjoy the upcoming show. All of the beloved characters participate, leaving viewers wishing they could take center stage for the entire performance. The segment is filled with catchy music and classic comedic gags. Be sure to keep an eye out for Gonzo the Great as he performs a daring leap over the water, and, of course, Dr. Teeth and his band bring their unmistakable brand of mayhem.
Interestingly, World of Color: Happiness prominently features the beloved Muppets song “Rainbow Connection,” which is beautifully covered by Boys II Men. However, the Muppets themselves do not make an appearance in the show, which feels like a missed opportunity for fans. Inside Out enthusiasts will be thrilled to see all of Riley’s emotions managing the new water show, which is infused with nostalgic Disney musical moments that evoke a rollercoaster of emotions. Yet, we can’t help but yearn for more Muppet moments! Their 3D show in California has been gone for years, and the Disney World version has just followed suit.
As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of the Muppets coaster on the East Coast, we hope that the West Coast will not be overlooked. The World of Color introduction received enthusiastic cheers, demonstrating that even when projected on water, the Muppets’ energy is simply unstoppable. Celebrating 70 years of timelessness, their vibrant spirit is something we should cherish and not take for granted.
World of Color: Happiness featuring a special message from the Muppets will be projected on select nights during Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary celebration at the Disneyland Resort.
