Magic: The Gathering is gearing up for an exciting year of expansion, catering to both enthusiasts of its crossover sets and dedicated players of the core game.
During the recent Magic Con held on Friday, Wizards of the Coast unveiled several upcoming sets, with the highlight being Reality Fracture. Set to launch in October, this new set will conclude the current storyline where Planeswalker Jace has devised an alternate universe to rectify the damages inflicted by the Phyrexians and Eldrazi. The introduction of the Echoverse brings forth innovative iterations of beloved Magic characters, including a unique version of Chandra who now wields ice magic instead of her traditional fire abilities.
According to Meris Mullaley, the creative and narrative lead for Fracture, the revised characters like Chandra, along with iconic figures such as Ajani and Garruk, stem from Jace’s ambition to create “the perfect multiverse.” Mullaley elaborated that Jace’s approach is influenced by his own perspectives. For instance, Chandra’s impulsiveness is a trait Jace often grapples with. He considers questions like, “Where did that impulsiveness originate from, and what events in her life contributed to shaping her character?” As Jace constructs this multiverse, he ponders scenarios such as, “What if her father had not perished? What if he and Chandra were jointly managing Avishkar?”
In a thrilling crossover development, Wizards is revisiting Middle-earth with a The Hobbit set for Magic: The Gathering. Following the success of the Lord of the Rings set released in 2023, fans can expect characters and settings from J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel to be featured on their own unique cards. Legacy characters like Gandalf and Bilbo will be receiving modern updates. To enhance the experience, some cards will showcase artwork reminiscent of book covers, while others will feature designs in the dwarven language.
