Mother Saves Son from Drowning in Florida Tragedy

A Florida mother tragically lost her life while saving her 4-year-old son from drowning in the St. Johns River. Nicole Grayson died after bravely jumping into the river on Saturday, July 18, to rescue her son who had fallen in.

Florida Mother Heroically Dies While Rescuing Her Young Son

Grayson was at Ed Stone Park near DeLand, Florida, with her son when the incident occurred. According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. The 43-year-old mother jumped into the water immediately when her son fell in. The child had been playing with an object near a wooden fence at the riverbank when it slipped into the water. In an attempt to retrieve the item, he lost his balance and fell in.

“A DeLand mother whose 4-year-old child fell into the St. Johns River on Saturday has died after she jumped in to save his life,” the statement indicated. “Deputies responded to Ed Stone Park west of DeLand around 4 p.m. Saturday after witnesses reported that both the child and his mother, later identified as 43-year-old Nicole Grayson, were in the river.”

Rescue Efforts Made, But Grayson Later Died in Hospital

Witnesses quickly alerted authorities about a woman and child struggling in the water around 4:00 p.m. One bystander flagged down a passing boat, and the boater threw two life preservers toward Grayson. Despite her efforts to keep her son afloat, she became submerged. The boater managed to pull the four-year-old onto the boat, while another courageous individual swam to Grayson, assisting her back onto the boat and performing CPR until the emergency medical services arrived.

Fortunately, her son was unharmed, but Grayson succumbed to her injuries in the ICU of the hospital by approximately 10:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, according to WESH 2 News. 

GoFundMe Established to Support Grayson’s Family

<pGrayson left behind six children, prompting her oldest child, Montraevia Adams, to initiate a GoFundMe campaign.

“Hello everyone, my name is Montraevia Adams, and I am my mom’s oldest child,” she wrote. “I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the love, prayers, condolences, and support we have received following the passing of my mother, Nicole Grayson.”

“She was an extraordinary mother who devoted herself to raising six children. Her love for each of us was unconditional, and she would go to great lengths for our wellbeing. We were truly fortunate to have a mother who was nurturing, supportive, selfless, and always willing to sacrifice her time to ensure we had everything we needed.”

Adams noted that all contributions will be directed toward Grayson’s funeral costs and to assist her and her siblings during this difficult time.

“Thank you all for your ongoing prayers, kindness, and support,” she added. “Our family is sincerely grateful. ❤️”
