The highly anticipated movie of the weekend, Mortal Kombat II, faced tough competition against the powerhouse performances of Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Despite its impressive visuals and action sequences, the film struggled to capture the audience’s attention fully. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Mortal Kombat II earned a total of million globally, with a significant portion of $40 million coming from the domestic box office. The international earnings of $23 million can be attributed to two primary factors: the film’s limited release in some regions and the overwhelming success of The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Michael. Both of these films have performed exceptionally well overseas, with Devil Wears Prada 2 benefiting from a boost in North America due to the Mother’s Day weekend. Warner Bros. is already contemplating a third installment, but the ultimate theatrical performance of Mortal Kombat II remains uncertain amidst fierce competition.
Alternatively, if you were not drawn to Mortal Kombat II, you might have opted to watch the weekend’s other new release, The Sheep Detectives. This film, featuring an intriguing storyline about talking sheep on a mission to uncover the mystery of Hugh Jackman’s death, achieved a global box office of million. Although it ranked fourth behind the aforementioned films, Sheep Detectives has garnered positive reviews from both critics and audiences, suggesting that strong word-of-mouth could enhance its performance in the upcoming weeks. The quirky and delightful premise of this film piques curiosity, making it a potential sleeper hit.
Both Mortal Kombat II and Sheep Detectives are part of a packed schedule in May. As we eagerly anticipate the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22, and its competition against Passenger and I Love Boosters, we also have Obsession and Is God Is set to premiere on May 15.
