Mom Allegedly Kills Two Children in North Dakota Tragedy

A mother in North Dakota has been taken into custody for allegedly murdering her two children by slitting their throats on Thursday, August 6. In a disturbing twist, Kailey Erhart is also accused of attacking her 1-year-old child with a knife.

North Dakota Mother Charged with the Murder of Her Children

Law enforcement officials from the Mandan Police Department responded to reports of a stabbing at Erhart’s residence. Upon arrival, they discovered her covered in blood and holding a knife against her own throat, as reported by Valley News Live. In a shocking display, she allegedly dropped the knife and urged the officers to kill her.

The officers found her three-year-old daughter, one-year-old son, and five-month-old infant lying motionless on a bed. All three children had sustained fatal injuries to their throats. Erhart reportedly claimed to the police that she placed her children on the bed but believed their injuries had occurred prior to her actions.

She acknowledged having the knife in her possession when law enforcement arrived, yet she expressed a lack of memory regarding the events that transpired.

The infant was pronounced dead at Alexius Medical Center on Thursday, while the three-year-old succumbed to her injuries at Sanford Health on Friday morning. Fortunately, the one-year-old child survived and is currently in recovery.

Erhart Allegedly Threatened Family with a Knife and Gun

To the tragic incident involving her children, Erhart reportedly threatened her husband, Cameron Erhart, with a firearm. Cameron managed to wrest the weapon from her and disassemble it.

A recorded phone call allegedly captured Erhart stating to Cameron, “Say goodbye to your kids” while holding one of the children. Before the police arrived, she purportedly chased Cameron and the children’s grandmother out of the house while wielding a knife. Reports indicate that Erhart was agitated due to the couple’s separation, and she also bit and scratched her husband during the ordeal.

The 22-year-old mother had previously issued threats to harm herself and her children, with Child Protective Services made aware of these threats. she had been committed to a mental health facility within the last 12 to 18 months but was cleared for custody of her children after receiving treatment prior to this incident.

Court Sets Erhart’s Bond at $3 Million

The court has set Erhart’s bond at an alarming $3 million, according to KFYR. Police Chief Jason Ziegler described the scene as “horrific.”

“A scene like that is something that nobody should ever have to see, and the way they came through in one of the most horrific times that they’ll probably experience in their life, I’m proud,” Ziegler stated.

“I want to acknowledge this is an extreme, tragic, and heartbreaking incident for the children involved, their families, our community, and first responders who arrived on the scene,” he continued. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”

Erhart faces charges including two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, along with three counts of aggravated assault.

A GoFundMe page has been established by Cameron’s mother, Melissa Erhart.

“My name is Melissa Erhart, and my son Cameron Erhart never thought we would have to ask for help like this,” she shared. “He is a father trying to survive something no parent should ever have to face. I lost two precious souls in a devastating tragedy after they were murdered by their mother, and the pain is more than I can express.”
