Mira Murati Testifies on Sam Altman’s Alleged Deceit

Mira Murati, the former CTO of OpenAI, has made serious allegations during her court testimony, claiming that CEO Sam Altman was not truthful with her. She stated that his actions directly impacted her capacity to perform her job effectively. This specific allegation—that Altman misrepresented the company’s safety practices—had previously gained media attention, particularly in a recent article by The New Yorker. Now, this situation has escalated to legal proceedings, highlighting the tension within the leadership of OpenAI.

In a surprising turn of events in 2023, Murati briefly stepped into the role of interim CEO at OpenAI after Altman was dismissed. This chaotic period also saw Emmett Shear appointed as a temporary CEO. Reports suggest a deteriorating relationship between Murati and Altman, primarily revolving around trust issues. Murati reportedly communicated her concerns regarding Altman’s management skills through memos directed at both the board and Altman, which ultimately contributed to his termination.

During the court proceedings related to the Musk v. Altman case, a video deposition of Murati was presented, confirming her earlier claims. She testified about preparations for a new model release, believed to be GPT-4 Turbo. According to her statements, as reported by The Verge, Altman informed her that the OpenAI legal department, led by Jason Kwon at the time, deemed it unnecessary for the OpenAI safety board to conduct a review of the model.

During her deposition, she was asked, “As you understand it, was Mr. Altman telling the truth when he made that statement to you?”

Murati responded with a clear “No.” She elaborated further, stating, “I confirmed that what Jason was saying and what Sam was saying were not the same thing.” She identified this discrepancy as a significant misalignment between Altman and Kwon, who now holds the position of chief strategy officer at OpenAI.

As reported by Reuters, Murati expressed her concern over Altman’s contradictory statements, indicating that he was “creating chaos.” She characterized the state of OpenAI during this tumultuous period as being “at catastrophic risk of falling apart,” voicing her worries about the potential for the company to completely collapse.

Following this confrontation, Murati issued memos to both Altman and the board, which, according to The New Yorker, led to the board’s decision to terminate Altman shortly thereafter. Murati served as interim CEO for only a few days before Shear took over temporarily, and soon after, Altman was reinstated—a move that Murati publicly endorsed.

As highlighted by Forbes, during her testimony on Wednesday, Murati noted that after Altman’s return, he continued to exhibit troubling behaviors, including delays in making crucial decisions and sending mixed messages to various team members. She indicated that these issues contributed to a “very difficult and chaotic environment” within the organization.

Approximately ten months after Altman regained his position as CEO, Murati made the decision to leave OpenAI and subsequently launched her own AI startup, marking a new chapter in her professional journey.
