George A. Romero, the legendary filmmaker renowned for revolutionizing the zombie genre, was in the midst of creating what would become his final undead horror film when he sadly passed away in 2017. After years of anticipation and speculation, his vision is finally coming to fruition. The estate of Romero has collaborated with the production company Roundtable to bring this highly awaited film, entitled Twilight of the Dead, to the big screen. With the esteemed Brad Anderson, known for his work on Session 9, at the helm as director, the film has also secured notable cast members Milla Jovovich, famous for her role in The Fifth Element, and Betty Gabriel, acclaimed for her performance in Get Out.

Twilight of the Dead promises to be the seventh installment in the iconic Romero franchise, which commenced with the groundbreaking horror film Night of the Living Dead in 1968. This legacy continued with classics like Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), Land of the Dead (2005), Diary of the Dead (2007), and Survival of the Dead (2009). The narrative of this new film will unfold on a tropical island, exploring the dark aspects of humanity through the eyes of the last remaining humans on earth, who find themselves entangled between conflicting factions of the undead, as reported by Deadline.
In discussing the film, Anderson expressed his aspirations for the storyline, likening it to other successful post-apocalyptic thrillers like I Am Legend, A Quiet Place, The Road, and The Last of Us. “I perceive this film to share the emotional intensity characteristic of these genre-defining stories,” he remarked. “Upon reading Twilight of The Dead, I found myself moved to tears by the conclusion, which is an unusual reaction for a movie of this nature. Yet, it possesses that unique blend of horror and emotional resonance that deeply resonates with me.”
While details regarding the characters portrayed by Jovovich and Gabriel remain under wraps, the film is set to begin production in 2025. Fans are eagerly awaiting more information, including the release date, as anticipation builds for this new chapter in the beloved zombie series.
