In a world that often feels bleak, the Ukrainian game developer 4A Games is set to deliver an even darker narrative with the upcoming release of Metro 2039, slated for this winter. The initial reveal of the title suggests that it will delve deeper into disturbing themes than its predecessors. This heightened darkness seems to draw inspiration from the ongoing turmoil following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has profoundly impacted the developers, turning their real-life experiences into a haunting backdrop for the game.
The cinematic trailer, which includes a glimpse of gameplay near the end, keeps much of the storyline under wraps. However, it effectively immerses players in the daunting and desolate world that the Metro series is known for. Set approximately 25 years after a catastrophic nuclear apocalypse has decimated life on Earth, Metro 2039 presents a narrative centered on the survivors navigating the wreckage of Moscow’s metro system. According to 4A Games, various underground factions unite under a new authority called “the Novoreich,” led by a formidable character known as Hunter, the Spartan.
While Hunter offers a promise of “salvation and a new life” for those left above ground, the reality beneath the surface is far from idyllic. The supposed unity among the factions has evidently fostered chaos, characterized by propaganda, authoritarian governance, and rampant violence. This grim depiction raises questions about the societal structures that emerge in the aftermath of devastation and how they mirror real-world issues.

The Metro series draws inspiration from the novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, a prominent Russian author who has been living in exile due to his outspoken condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Although Metro 2039 is not directly based on any specific work from Glukhovsky, 4A Studios collaborated closely with him to craft a narrative that embodies shared values of freedom and truth, profoundly resonating with the harsh realities of today.
In their communications, 4A Games openly acknowledges the challenging environment in which Metro 2039 is being developed. The studio states, “Many developers continue to work from multiple locations, facing daily challenges never anticipated.” They highlighted the ongoing struggles, including power outages, reliance on generators, and interruptions from missile and drone attacks, which have not halted development but rather fueled a sense of resilience, collaboration, and unwavering dedication to their craft.
Furthermore, the studio elaborates, “The war has directly influenced the development of Metro 2039, with a narrative keenly focused on the themes of choices, actions, consequences, and the high stakes of securing a future.” While the story is told from a distinctly Ukrainian perspective, it still retains the authentic essence of the Metro saga. The long-standing bleak nature of the series is expected to intensify, especially considering the context of an ongoing conflict and the involvement of an exiled Russian author in the storytelling process. However, the limited gameplay footage released so far does not explicitly convey these themes.

The preview introduces a new player character, known as The Stranger, marking the first voiced protagonist in the Metro series. Although we only hear him scream in the trailer, his character’s backstory suggests he has been navigating the harsh realities of the above-ground wasteland, ultimately compelled to return to the treacherous metro tunnels. The brief gameplay segment showcases the typical first-person shooter perspective of The Stranger as he ventures underground, only to face a terrifying monster that nearly claims his life. He is subsequently rescued by a group of survivors who barely manage to close the doors of their refuge before a larger wave of enemies overwhelms them, creating a chilling atmosphere.
The remainder of the preview evokes a surreal or nightmarish quality, leaving much of the narrative open to interpretation. Nevertheless, the attention to detail in both the environments and character designs is striking, indicating significant advancements in graphics since the last installment, Metro Exodus, which debuted back in 2019. Players can anticipate a visually stunning representation of a devastated Moscow and the intricate tunnels that lie beneath.
While an exact release date remains unconfirmed, 4A Games assures fans that Metro 2039 will be available this winter for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
