Mercy Miller, the talented son of rap icon Master P, is preparing for an exciting second season at Houston. The legendary Cougars player, Otis Birdsong, anticipates remarkable performances from Mercy, confidently stating to TMZ Sports, “He’s already something special.” This endorsement highlights the high expectations set for Mercy as he continues to develop his skills on the court.
During an encounter at LAX, we spoke with the former All-American, who shared insights about Mercy’s growth. He emphasized that last season was crucial for Mercy as he absorbed valuable knowledge from head coach Kelvin Sampson. This experience has made him a more formidable player, showcasing the importance of mentorship and learning in the competitive world of college basketball.
According to Birdsong, “In coach Sampson’s system and culture, you have to wait your turn.” He explained that Mercy needed to understand the team’s dynamics and culture. This learning process has not only made him tougher but has also ignited a desire within him to compete vigorously for a starting position on the team, showcasing his determination and ambition.
Birdsong expressed his enthusiasm for Mercy’s potential, stating, “He’s gonna have a hell of a year this year. He’s working hard in the weight room.” This commitment to physical conditioning and training is vital in enhancing Mercy’s performance on the court, preparing him for the intensity of the upcoming season.
The seasoned veteran, now 69 years old, went so far as to label Mercy as one of the best shooters on the team. This commendation carries significant weight, especially coming from Birdsong, who is among the elite few whose numbers have been retired by the Cougars. Such recognition reflects the high standards Mercy is expected to meet as he progresses in his basketball career.
As a freshman, Miller had the opportunity to showcase his skills on the court, participating in 22 games during the 2024-25 season. This experience is crucial for his development, providing him with the chance to learn from in-game situations and improve his overall performance for the future.
We also engaged Birdsong, a No. 2 overall pick in the 1977 draft, for his insights on this year’s top prospect, Cooper Flagg, and his recent performance in the Summer League. While Birdsong acknowledged Flagg’s exceptional talent, he urged fans to temper their expectations and not rush to label him the league MVP just yet, emphasizing the importance of patience in a young athlete’s career.
