Caitlin Clark has faced significant challenges and physical confrontations as she embarks on her WNBA career. In light of this, her college coach, Lisa Bluder, has proposed several strategies to help mitigate this issue and enhance player safety within the league.
TMZ Sports recently had an insightful discussion with the retired Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball icon on Thursday. During the conversation, they explored the treatment that her former star guard, Caitlin Clark, has been receiving since transitioning into the professional realm of basketball.
Although Bluder does not believe Caitlin is being intentionally “targeted” by opposing players, she recognizes that competitors are giving her their “best shot” each night. This effort stems from the notion that they believe physical dominance is the key to stopping her impressive skill set on the court.
“This is an aspect of the WNBA. It’s ingrained in the current rules of the game, and if we want to see a change, I believe we must adjust how the game is officiated,” Bluder stated, emphasizing the need for reform to enhance player protection.
So the question arises… what solutions should the WNBA implement?
“I believe there should be more freedom of movement in our game,” Bluder explained. “This means, yes, calling more fouls, which may not be popular, but players will adapt to these changes and learn to play within the new framework.”
“If we begin enforcing more fouls and put an emphasis on the rules, players will adjust their gameplay because they want to remain on the court and contribute to their teams’ success,” she remarked, highlighting the adaptability of athletes in the league.
Bluder also stated that if a more serious foul is committed by a player, there should be strict consequences, including ejection from the game and substantial fines. She emphasized that these penalties should be significant enough to truly impact the players financially, thereby deterring reckless play.
“I believe that is the only way to change the behavior of players,” Bluder asserted. “I am confident that if these adjustments are made, more fans will enjoy the game, and it will create a more positive experience for everyone involved.”
While calling more fouls may not be the most popular solution among fans, ensuring that the best players remain healthy is a goal that everyone should support. This is particularly crucial after Clark was recently involved in a significant on-court altercation earlier this week.
