Labubu: Can It Survive the Collectible Hype?

Spread the love

The latest release from Pop Mart’s Monsters collection is arguably its most daring endeavor yet, introducing the beloved blind-box character Labubu into an eccentric food-themed product line that may not resonate with all existing fans. Within the Monsters: Wacky Mart, the creative vision of Kasing Lung shines brightly, showcasing the playful spirit of this mischievous creature in a way that may attract more vinyl art collectors. The designs evoke a sense of nostalgic chaos reminiscent of Gremlins, featuring Labubu diving into whimsical culinary adventures depicted in milk cartons or tempura shrimp packaging. This innovative direction signifies a departure from Labubu’s identity as a mere keychain trend icon, raising the question: will the trend-chasers follow suit?

Labubu has been expertly carving out its niche in the global market ever since it went viral, capturing the attention of enthusiasts worldwide. One might assume that the recent plush keychain fashion craze would have a fleeting lifespan, yet it appears to be thriving more than ever. Celebrities like Cher have been spotted sporting Labubu keychains at prominent events, and a limited designer edition inspired by influential tastemaker Pharrell Williams recently made headlines by selling for a staggering $31,250 at auction, according to Hype Beast. This remarkable sale highlights the escalating demand and collector interest surrounding Labubu.

While many skeptics argue that Labubu is destined to meet the same fate as Beanie Babies, where inflated prices and limited releases could lead to eventual burnout, there are several factors that may contribute to its enduring popularity. It brings me no joy to mention Minions, those peculiar, yellow, big-eyed characters who seem to have an unending presence in pop culture. Their nonsensical chatter is a haunting reminder during visits to Universal Studios, and I often find myself grateful for any days when my child remains unaware of them. Despite their seemingly dwindling novelty, Minions have continued to thrive ever since their introduction in the Despicable Me franchise back in 2010. Their merchandise has consistently outperformed that of the film’s protagonists, defying expectations that they would fade into obscurity. Now, with five films and multiple theme park attractions dedicated to Minions, it’s clear that these characters will remain a staple in the collectible market.

Interestingly, Labubu may not originate from a cinematic universe, but it shares a parallel journey with Minions in the ever-evolving landscape of pop culture icons. Labubu and the other Monsters embody a similar sense of adorable chaos, even if I hesitate to classify Minions as cute. The rich lore surrounding Labubu crafted by Kasing Lung presents ample opportunities for expanded storytelling. This character could easily transition into various entertainment mediums, captivating fans of fantasy animation. Frankly, Labubu deserves more recognition than the incessant antics of the “banana-loving” Minions. Another insightful comparison could be made with Trolls, whose vibrant, alien-like characters served as a precursor to the collectible craze that preceded Beanie Babies. Although the Trolls franchise also evolved into a successful movie series produced by Universal, their merchandise never quite achieved the same level of fervor as it did in the late 20th century. In theory, Labubu holds similar potential for growth and expansion.

The plush keychain trend has reached a fever pitch globally, and it remains to be seen whether it can sustain its momentum. Finding a Labubu has become increasingly challenging, but I was fortunate enough to secure a new addition to my collection thanks to my husband’s impressive skills honed during the overnight lines of San Diego Comic-Con for the local Pop Mart opening. In contrast, regions like Japan have already embraced this trend, particularly in one of the world’s largest Gachapon capitals. Pop Mart is poised to open additional locations there soon, assessing the potential for growth in this market.

Currently, the peak popularity of Labubu is concentrated in major markets such as China, the U.S., and the UK. Visitors to the Pop Mart theme park, Popland in China, may find it challenging to purchase Labubu products, yet they can enjoy live entertainment featuring Labubu alongside other characters from the Monsters universe. Unfortunately, opportunities to meet Labubu in the U.S. remain scarce, although a Lafufu knock-off made a memorable appearance at the Los Angeles “No Kings” protest. However, it seems the keychains have now entered the “cringe tacky promotional stunt” phase, as evidenced by a recent social media post showcasing the cast of F1 unboxing Labubu blind boxes.

In the UK, Labubus have resumed sales after a hiatus caused by altercations breaking out among collectors and resellers. However, challenges persist due to the shifting market dynamics, wherein flippers hoard significant quantities of product, driving prices to exorbitant levels. The new sales protocol in the UK now involves acquiring Labubus through a random lottery system, which is as unexciting as it sounds. Consequently, Pop Mart faces a dilemma: either produce more stock, which could undermine the limited availability that positions Labubu as a coveted luxury item, or devise more effective solutions to manage demand.

With the recent launch of the Wacky Mart collection, there are questions regarding whether the brand is nearing oversaturation with a product line that may not resonate with the broader audience frustrated by the slow release of plushes through retailers. Perhaps this concern is unwarranted in the long term, as the franchise possesses the ability to extend its viral appeal into a dedicated core fandom through diversified mediums. This evolving future is one that fans of fantasy creatures can eagerly anticipate, particularly if they have felt sidelined in the quest for new characters to cherish.

Personally, Labubu entered my life at a pivotal moment when I was seeking something to connect with during my early days of parenthood, and this shared experience imbues the character with a timeless quality for me. Whether it becomes a fleeting fashion statement or a promising new venture within pop culture, Kasing Lung’s whimsical elf creatures could very well find their way into a more significant cultural narrative.
