Director Gareth Edwards, who was set to lead the next installment in the Jurassic franchise, is no longer attached to the project. This change arises from “creative differences,” leaving the sequel to 2025’s Jurassic World Rebirth in search of new leadership while still under development.
In a statement to Deadline, Universal and Amblin expressed, “We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth.” Edwards will now shift his focus to other original projects he is developing, prompting the search for a suitable replacement director. Speculation lingers regarding whether these creative differences relate to his recent comments on AI, raising questions about the production company’s preferences.
Edwards’ 2025 film, featuring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, performed impressively at the box office, amassing approximately $340 million domestically and $869 million globally. With such success, it’s no surprise that the studios aim to continue expanding this beloved franchise. Writer David Koepp has crafted a sequel screenplay that promises to bring back all three leading stars.
Details about the storyline remain under wraps, but one thing is for certain: Gareth Edwards will not be directing this sequel.
This raises the important question: who will take the helm of this anticipated project? Numerous talented directors are likely vying for the opportunity, with many possessing the skills needed to deliver a thrilling experience. We envision someone with a unique vision, perhaps directors like Olivia Wilde, Edgar Wright, Greta Gerwig, or the dynamic duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller. While it’s uncertain if any of these names will be in the running, the potential for fresh creativity is certainly exciting.
While Edwards delivered a commendable film, maintaining his vision could have provided a consistent tone moving forward. as Ian Malcolm famously noted, life finds a way.
