We reported these alarming threats to law enforcement multiple times, yet no action was taken. During that prolonged period, we were constantly harassed by people who made it abundantly clear they did not accept our relationship. A significant portion of this harassment was openly homophobic in nature.”
Kern De Gonzales continued his emotional recounting in the Facebook statement, “Upon returning to the site to check our mail, we were devastated to discover the skull of one of our dogs along with its harness displayed in plain sight. This horrific sight caused immense emotional distress for both of us. Overwhelmed with grief, we began to yell and cry in response to the pain of what we witnessed. At that moment, a man approached us, unleashing a torrent of violent homophobic slurs. He then brandished a gun from his lap and opened fire. Jonathan and I were unarmed and posed no threat to anyone. We were simply grieving together. In that critical moment, Jonathan pushed me out of harm’s way, ultimately saving my life.”
In response to these serious allegations, the San Antonio Police Department stated, “Despite online claims suggesting this incident was a hate crime, the investigation has thus far found no evidence to indicate that Mr. Joss’s murder was connected to his sexual orientation.”
