Ben Affleck Reflects on His Divorce from Jennifer Lopez in a Candid GQ Interview
Ben Affleck appears to have found a silver lining in his personal struggles with love.
Despite his public image, which includes two high-profile divorces, Affleck expressed a sense of gratitude during his interview with GQ. He emphasized how fortunate he feels to have Jennifer Garner as a co-parent. This partnership is essential for him as he navigates the chaotic atmosphere created by the media that often surrounds his life, particularly following his relationships.
“There’s nothing inherently newsworthy about the daily happenings of my life, or any conversations I have with others who happen to be photographed,” Affleck remarked, addressing the constant tabloid scrutiny. He pointed out how the media often attempts to create sensational narratives by linking mundane events, such as his demeanor while enjoying a Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee, to broader stories. “I’m acutely aware of the cosmic joke that this all represents,” he added with a touch of humor.
Affleck, who shares three children—Violet, 19, Seraphina, 16, and Samuel, 13—with Garner, highlighted that the key to managing his life amidst the chaos is focusing on what genuinely matters, such as his work and the quality time he spends with his family. This approach helps him maintain perspective in an environment filled with distractions and noise.

“What I’ve chosen to focus on is simple: I know what’s truly happening in my life. More importantly, my kids are aware of the reality. We used to have a routine with my ex-wife, where if they saw something sensationalized on a magazine cover, we’d clarify, ‘This isn’t always true. If it were, you’d have 15 siblings based on the number of stories claiming your mother was pregnant,’” Affleck shared, showcasing his sense of humor. He expressed his appreciation for having a strong co-parent in Jennifer Garner, who is supportive and cooperative in raising their children.
While he acknowledged that the media attention can be “more of a headache than anything,” Affleck candidly admitted that he is still trying to understand why he has been a subject of public fascination for over three decades. However, he also noted that there are certainly worse situations he could find himself in.
This revealing interview marked Affleck’s first public comments regarding his split from Jennifer Lopez, shedding light on his perspective.

While fans speculated about potential relationship troubles in Lopez’s documentary, The Best Love Story Never Told, Affleck clarified that what appeared to be his frustration regarding the sharing of private moments was misinterpreted.
He explained, “Part of my thought process was, ‘If I’m going to participate in this, I want to do it in a sincere and engaging manner.’ I found it to be a fascinating exploration of relationships. As I mentioned earlier, there are individuals who manage celebrity life more adeptly than I do, Jennifer being one of them. My natural inclination is to be more reserved and private than she is. In relationships, there are often differing perspectives on such matters, and I thought, ‘This is intriguing because how do you reconcile those differences?’”
Affleck continued, “I genuinely care for and support this individual. I believe in her. She is remarkable, and I want the world to see that. The statement I made in the documentary conveyed, ‘You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, I don’t like going out on the water.’ You have to take responsibility for what you knew going into any relationship.”
He also emphasized that their differing attitudes toward fame and public scrutiny were not the root cause of their breakup.

“It’s important to clarify that this wasn’t the reason for a major fracture in our relationship,” he emphasized. “You can’t watch that documentary and think, ‘Now I understand the issues that plagued these two.’”
Regarding the issues in their relationship, Affleck chose not to delve deeply but made it clear that he holds nothing but respect for Lopez. They divorced on August 20, 2024, just two years after rekindling their romance and marrying, following a previous engagement that had been called off in the early 2000s.
“This is an individual I hold in high regard… I genuinely respect her,” Affleck stated. “There’s a tendency to overanalyze breakups, looking for root causes. However, the reality is often much more mundane than people might expect or find interesting.”
As for Lopez, while she has remained relatively silent about the reasons for her and Affleck’s breakup, she recently shared that the weeks and months following their split felt “lonely.”

“It feels lonely, unfamiliar, and frightening. It brings feelings of sadness and desperation. However, when you confront those emotions and remind yourself that ‘these feelings won’t destroy me,’ you realize that I am capable of finding joy and happiness on my own. Being in a relationship does not define who I am,” Lopez expressed in an October interview with Interview magazine.
“I can’t seek my happiness from other people. I must find happiness within myself,” she continued, reflecting on her journey of self-discovery after becoming single again at 55. “I used to say I was a happy person, but I was still looking for something from someone else to fill that void. Now, I realize that I’m actually complete on my own.”
