The adoption rate of ByteDance’s Instagram-like platform, Lemon8, appears to be losing momentum, prompting the company to leverage TikTok for driving new sign-ups for Lemon8. This strategic move highlights the competitive landscape of social media apps and the importance of cross-platform integration.
In a significant announcement today, TikTok revealed that users will now be able to seamlessly access Lemon8 using their existing TikTok login credentials. This integration aims to simplify the onboarding process for users, allowing them to manage both accounts with ease and enhancing user experience across platforms.
TikTok elaborated on this integration:
“While Lemon8 will remain a distinct app, users will benefit from a unified login system. This means that creators can utilize a single account to access both platforms, thereby enhancing their ability to cross-promote and share content seamlessly. This integration is crafted to facilitate a smoother photo-sharing experience, significantly increasing the reach and engagement opportunities for all TikTok creators.””
Lemon8, which gained considerable popularity in the U.S. last year, combines features reminiscent of both Instagram and Pinterest. ByteDance is keen on leveraging this app to further penetrate the Western social media market, aiming to attract users who seek engaging and visually appealing platforms.

Despite the app being available since 2020 and enjoying popularity in various Asian markets, the surge in interest in Lemon8 last year coincided with ByteDance’s broader strategy to enhance in-stream shopping capabilities. The company envisioned Lemon8 as a complementary platform to TikTok, aiming to create a robust ecosystem for users.
However, it seems that the initial strategy might not be yielding the desired results. Utilizing TikTok to drive Lemon8 sign-ups mirrors strategies previously adopted by Instagram with Threads, which achieved record-breaking sign-up numbers. With a user base exceeding a billion, TikTok’s simplified sign-up process for Lemon8 could potentially reignite interest and put the app back on the map.
Nonetheless, it’s important to note that Lemon8 does not introduce any groundbreaking features. In contrast to Threads, which attracted users seeking alternatives to X, Lemon8 functions primarily as a replication of existing social media elements without offering unique value propositions.
Even so, the streamlined account creation process is likely to result in a noticeable increase in sign-ups. This uptick could help position Lemon8 as a relevant player in the social media landscape once again, potentially attracting a broader audience interested in visually-driven content.
At the very least, this strategy will encourage more users to explore the app, simplifying the process for TikTok users to create an account. While it is a promising approach, the long-term viability of Lemon8 as a major contender in the social media space remains uncertain.
Moreover, if Lemon8 begins to gain significant traction, it wouldn’t be surprising if Meta decides to launch a competing application, humorously dubbed “Lemon9.” This could intensify the competition in this already crowded space.
