TikTok has recently announced a significant expansion of its partnership with the National PTA in the United States, aimed at empowering parents to guide their teenagers in understanding digital safety and recognizing potentially risky online behaviors. This strategic initiative focuses on equipping families with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of the digital world and promote a safer online environment for young users.
As part of this initiative, TikTok will provide funding to expand the PTA’s “Create with Kindness” program, which is designed to foster meaningful discussions between teenagers and their families about online safety. This program will be implemented in more high schools across the U.S., creating opportunities for parents and teens to engage in important conversations about navigating the digital landscape responsibly.
According to TikTok:
“As a longstanding supporter of PTA Connected, we’re excited to back National PTA’s initiative focusing on digital safety, well-being, access, equity, and digital literacy. For this academic year, TikTok is enabling National PTA to allocate over $300,000 in funding to 100 local and regional PTSAs at high school campuses throughout America. This funding will assist in implementing Create with Kindness, an interactive program designed to facilitate discussions between teens and their families about online safety, civility, and collaboratively establishing positive digital boundaries.”
The “Create with Kindness” program provides access to a comprehensive array of guides regarding online safety, which schools can utilize to organize local events aimed at raising awareness and addressing key concerns. These resources are essential for helping families understand the intricacies of digital interactions and how to uphold safety standards while engaging with online platforms.
With the new funding, the PTA has successfully conducted various events of this nature, and it is now poised to expand the reach of this vital program to additional regions. This expansion is critical as it allows more families to benefit from the resources and support offered by the PTA in promoting safe and responsible internet use among teenagers.
Moreover, TikTok will actively participate in these events, demonstrating its commitment to promoting digital safety education.
“This academic year, National PTA and TikTok, alongside the relevant state PTA and local PTSA, will co-host five Create with Kindness marquee events with PTSA high school students, their parents and caregivers, and faculty. These events will delve into their experiences and expectations while navigating the online world, further enhancing their understanding of TikTok’s safety features.”
In addition, TikTok is updating its Parent’s Guide to include fresh insights into effective communication strategies surrounding online safety, ensuring that teenagers are informed about what to be vigilant for, especially when using social apps. This is a crucial step toward fostering a safer online environment for young users by empowering parents with relevant knowledge and resources.
“The guide, developed in collaboration with National PTA, outlines TikTok’s parenting tools known as Family Pairing, which allows caregivers to customize a variety of content and privacy settings for their teenagers. It also provides an overview of TikTok’s age-appropriate settings that are automatically activated for younger and older teens, ensuring a tailored experience that promotes safety and well-being.”

Addressing online safety is a critical focus for TikTok, especially as the platform faces continued scrutiny regarding its effects on teenagers and the potential risks associated with its addictive nature. Several regions are currently contemplating restrictions on social media access for younger teens due to various concerns, particularly regarding harmful exposure and addiction. Thus, it is paramount for platforms like TikTok to actively demonstrate their commitment to addressing these issues and fostering a safer online experience.
Implementing these measures could prove to be a constructive step towards enhancing understanding of online safety, contrasting with broad bans that might inadvertently elevate risks for young users. By focusing on education and awareness, TikTok is taking proactive steps toward ensuring that both parents and teenagers are equipped with the necessary tools to navigate the digital landscape responsibly.
