Home of the Dragon‘s surprisingly subdued season two finale, “The Queen That Ever Was,” left numerous threads dangling for season three to deal with. However since new episodes aren’t coming anytime quickly—and followers need solutions, dammit!—it’s time to scour morning-after interviews for any perception or hints. Fortuitously, the episode’s director, Geeta Vasant Patel, is right here to assist with a number of the heavy lifting.
In case you haven’t watched final evening’s finale but…
In an interview with Selection, Patel, who additionally directed this season’s third episode (“The Burning Mill“), talked about Daemon’s imaginative and prescient. It immediately references some essential Recreation of Thrones moments—together with White Walkers and the start of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons—and experiencing it convinces the wayward King Consort to help Queen Rhaenyra’s declare to the Iron Throne.
Home of the Dragon first referenced A Track of Ice and Hearth in season one; King Viserys defined it to his daughter as a prophetic dream had by Aegon the Conqueror, and stated it’s a story each Targaryen ruler should perceive as they unite the realm in opposition to this supernatural risk. In season two, Rhaenyra handed the story to Jace, her son and inheritor. However “The Queen That Ever Was” was the primary time Home of the Dragon has visualized the oral historical past—and it was additionally the primary time the present has immediately glimpsed its Recreation of Thrones future.
“I used to be so honored that I might get to be a part of executing that,” Patel advised the commerce. “Once I acquired the script, all these beats of the visuals had been listed, however there was area for course. You must determine how all these issues are going to move collectively … I assumed the dragons [next to Daenerys] in shadow can be actually attention-grabbing as a result of it’s not about Daenerys, it’s concerning the story of historical past. We’re in Daemon’s viewpoint, in order that imaginative and prescient needed to inform the story to Daemon of the historical past of his individuals and that Rhaenyra wanted to be on the throne. It’s very tempting to be like, ‘Let’s present Daenerys! Let’s zoom in on this!’ However that’s not what it’s about. In truth, Daemon doesn’t know who she is. It has to make Daemon perceive that he has to bend the knee to Rhaenyra willingly.”
The imaginative and prescient additionally options hints of Daemon’s personal doom-laden future, however Patel wasn’t keen to speak about what could or is probably not coming in season three (“I can get in hassle if I reveal something,” she stated).
Much less cagily, she admitted she—like everybody watching—wish to know what’s up with Otto Hightower. He’s been MIA since leaving King’s Touchdown in shame, and a fast lower within the finale reveals the rationale for his absence: he’s been locked away in a jail… someplace. “I used to be requested to shoot that scene,” Patel stated, however she wasn’t given any context for it. “I need to know the place he’s, too. I don’t know!”
Head to Selection to learn the complete interview, which additionally digs into that tense scene between Rhaenyra and Alicent, and provides some particulars on the 2 new dragons that made their debut within the finale.
