The Google Pixel 6a has demonstrated remarkable performance and value in various aspects, yet a concerning issue has emerged regarding the smartphone’s battery safety. Following a report from Android Authority detailing incidents where a Pixel 6a battery overheated sufficiently to ignite, further investigation into the current Android 16 beta has revealed that, as a precautionary measure, the battery capacity and charging speed for the Pixel 6a will be intentionally reduced. Additionally, Android Authority obtained a statement from Google addressing the situation:
A subset of Pixel 6a phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating. The update will enable battery management features that will reduce capacity and charging performance after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. We’ll contact impacted customers next month, with all the information they need to address the issue.
The Pixel 6a is projected to receive software support until July 2027, marking it as a significant addition to the lineup, yet it is not the only model to experience battery issues this year. Earlier in January, Google implemented an update that inadvertently diminished the battery life of the Pixel 4a to enhance the device’s stability. Furthermore, in April, the company initiated a repair and compensation program following reports of batteries swelling in the Pixel 7a.
