According to PEOPLE, 14-year-old Kelaia Turner is now suffering from severe brain damage due to a tragic incident stemming from relentless bullying. Her parents have initiated a lawsuit against Greenville County Schools, claiming that the institution disregarded the bullying complaints she made for over a year. The situation escalated when Kelaia, then just 12 years old, attempted to take her own life. On March 17, 2023, her mother, Ty Turner, discovered Kelaia hanging from a belt, prompting immediate emergency medical intervention, as reported by WYFF4.
“She was cool to the touch, blood was coming out of her nose, and she had already urinated on herself. She had fully committed to what it was that she was attempting to do, and she was gone for eight whole minutes. Paramedics couldn’t find a pulse, and they couldn’t find her heartbeat. There were grown men in the room crying,” Turner recounted in a heartfelt statement.
As a consequence of this horrific event, Kelaia was hospitalized for 101 days, with 31 of those days spent in the ICU. Disturbingly, while she was in a coma, a classmate allegedly visited her hospital room, took pictures of her, and shared them with another student. This incident reportedly led to those images being posted online, which fueled damaging rumors regarding Kelaia’s condition and injuries, further exacerbating her distress.
The family’s 24-page lawsuit, filed during the summer, details multiple incidents where Kelaia reported being physically assaulted by another student, who insulted her by calling her derogatory names such as a man and a roach, starting in 2021. The lawsuit also criticizes Kelaia’s teacher, Olivia Bennett, for her failure to intervene and stop the ongoing bullying and harassment, which has serious implications for the school’s responsibility in maintaining a safe learning environment.
“Ms. Bennett was complicit in the bullying and said nothing to the other students to stop it. One student asked, ‘Where’s the roach?’ and Ms. Bennett pointed to Kelaia,” the complaint alleges, highlighting the need for educators to act decisively against bullying behavior.
Kelaia’s mother, Ty, expressed her frustration, revealing that she reached out to the school multiple times in hopes of finding resolution to the serious issues her daughter faced, yet she received no substantive response or remedy from the school authorities.
“There was no less than seven to nine times that I, myself personally, reached out to the school, and I had the emails, and half the time they didn’t respond back, and if they did, it wasn’t with anything of any sustenance, there was never any resolution,” Ty shared, capturing the ongoing struggle of parents advocating for their children’s safety.
Greenville County Schools Responds to Serious Allegations of Bullying
On December 4, Greenville County Schools spokesperson Tim Waller publicly expressed the district’s profound sympathy for Kelaia Turner and her family, as reported by PEOPLE. However, Waller also refuted the allegations made by Kelaia’s parents, indicating that the school has taken these claims seriously and has addressed them directly with the family.
“The District is aware of the allegations made by this parent and has addressed them directly with the parent. We disagree with these allegations and have conducted a thorough investigation and review of each allegation at the time they were made. While we do not agree with the allegations, our hearts go out to Kelaia Tecora Turner, her mother, and their family. Every school implements anti-bullying strategies and programs for students, including how to recognize bullying and how to report it,” Waller stated, emphasizing the district’s commitment to student welfare.
The New York Post reported that Waller also mentioned ongoing efforts to investigate the claims thoroughly. Furthermore, he indicated that school staff actively addresses incidents of bullying with appropriate measures to ensure student safety and well-being.
“When a school is aware of possible bullying, those concerns are investigated promptly, thoroughly, and confidentially. Steps are taken to determine what occurred, and if any inappropriate conduct occurred, then disciplinary measures are provided to the offending student and strategies designed to prevent any similar conduct are implemented as well. If the alleged conduct is possibly criminal in nature, law enforcement is notified,” Waller explained, reinforcing the school’s protocol for handling such serious issues.
