Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger is set to be released from prison after being granted parole, having served a portion of her murder sentence.
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has announced her release after she completed just 7 years of her 10-year sentence for fatally shooting Botham Jean.
In September 2018, Guyger entered Jean’s apartment, mistakenly believing it was her own. Convinced he was an intruder, she shot him fatally while he sat in his living room.
At the time of the incident, Jean was reportedly relaxing on his couch and enjoying a bowl of ice cream when Guyger entered and shot him in the chest.
After her conviction, which occurred about a year later, Jean’s brother, Brandt Jean, famously forgave her in court by giving her a hug.
Guyger had previously sought parole in 2024, after serving half of her sentence, but her request was denied at that time.
The exact date of her release has not yet been disclosed.
