Stephen shared the story of his first encounter with Evelyn during a visit to his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. At that time, he was contemplating whether to marry another woman he was dating, a dilemma he later discussed in a Q&A session on The Late Show. While there, he accompanied his mother to a performance of The Hydrogen Jukebox, where he had an epiphany: “I thought—honest to God—’There’s your wife. You’re going to marry her.’”
Evelyn later recounted that seeing Stephen with his mother was a positive indicator. In a May 2021 interview with Montclair Local, she remarked, “He walked in with his mother on his arm. I was thinking, ‘That man loves his mother.’”
