Climbers at the Empire State Building believed they had reached the pinnacle of adventure, unaware that NYPD officers were swiftly following them—equipped with body cameras and handcuffs.
The recently released body camera footage presents a gripping perspective of the officers’ pursuit, showcasing their ascent up the iconic skyscraper’s steel spire. The video captures the moment they apprehended the daring climbers, renowned “rooftoppers” Ivan Beerkus and Angela Nikolau, hundreds of feet above the bustling streets of Manhattan.
This footage, released on Wednesday by NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, shows officers skillfully navigating the narrow metal framework of the building until they reach the climbers. The duo is then escorted down through the intricate maze of beams before being placed in handcuffs.
Commissioner Tisch commended the officers in a post on X, stating… “This offers a glimpse into the dedicated efforts of our Emergency Service Unit. God bless these officers.”
As reported by TMZ, the climbers triggered a significant police response on Wednesday afternoon after ascending the 1,454-foot landmark. They unfurled a peace banner and even paused for a marriage proposal before beginning their descent.
