Donald Trump is in the Epstein files,” claiming, “That’s the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day.” This controversial statement quickly gained traction online before it was quietly deleted. However, the impact was significant, as Trump faced an unprecedented backlash from his own supporters, ignited by an outsider wielding considerable influence in the digital realm: Musk.

The unraveling of the once-close alliance between Trump and Musk became evident on June 5. The initial “Phase 1” document release in early 2024 failed to implicate any significant Democratic figures, leaving the MAGA base disillusioned. In a series of provocative posts dated July 17, Musk utilized Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into his X platform, to compile a list of individuals who allegedly visited Epstein’s notorious private island. According to Musk, these individuals “should be investigated for possible rape of underage girls provided by Epstein.” He urged, “Think hard and research thoroughly. Order by probable severity and frequency of their crimes.” This statement was not just an inquiry; it was a direct appeal to the emotional instincts of the MAGA base, invoking fear, anger, and a thirst for justice. In this narrative, Trump was no longer positioned as the champion against elites; instead, he was being portrayed as part of the problem.

Trump Faces a Waning Influence Amidst Controversy
In response to the firestorm ignited by Musk, Trump attempted to downplay the allegations, labeling them a “dumb hoax,” and urged his followers to shift their focus elsewhere. However, many of his supporters rejected this call to action. The intensity of frustration escalated further when the Department of Justice (DoJ) dismissed federal prosecutor Maurene Comey, who had reportedly reopened aspects of the Epstein investigation. This development fueled suspicions among many that Trump was shielding someone, or potentially himself, from scrutiny.

Musk pinpointed a crucial issue that Trump’s supporters could not overlook—Epstein—and wielded it to destabilize their loyalty. For the first time since the inception of his political career in 2016, Donald Trump found himself not dictating the narrative but rather responding to an agenda set by someone else. In this case, Elon Musk is the one steering the conversation.
