Sheeran conveyed his remorse to the audience, stating, “I am so, so sorry” for the mistakes made. He elaborated on the reasons behind his decision to speak out at this moment, indicating his desire for transparency and connection with his fans.
He expressed, “I don’t want to let my fans down. I’ve never aimed to be an activist musician, but this situation has thrust me into a significant discourse on freedom of speech and one of the most complex political issues of our time. My concerts have always served as a sanctuary for everyone, which is incredibly important to me. Upholding my commitment to my fans defines who I am, and that’s why I’m here tonight, standing alone and continuing my tour.”
Referring to the October 7 attack on Israel as “catastrophic,” he criticized the response from Israel as “unjustifiable” and “disproportionate.”
This marked Ed’s first concert following the removal of Macklemore from the tour after the controversy surrounding his “Free Palestine” remarks. In a show of solidarity, the remaining opening acts withdrew from the tour, leaving Ed as the sole performer.
Macklemore alleged that NFL owner Robert Kraft voiced his disapproval of Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian statements, pressuring Ed to remove him from the lineup, effectively presenting an ultimatum: drop Macklemore or face consequences.
Ed clarified that he was not responsible for the decision to remove Macklemore. Kraft indicated that having Macklemore perform at his stadium would cross a boundary. Other NFL team owners joined in opposition to Macklemore, leading to his departure from the tour.
Before the concert, a prominent pro-Palestinian organization, the Philly Palestine Coalition, announced plans to protest the event, expressing their concerns regarding the situation.
A spokesperson from the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed to TMZ that they had implemented “appropriate measures” to ensure the safety of all attendees ahead of the concert.
Many fans who purchased tickets for the Philadelphia concert sought refunds, but they encountered significant challenges in doing so. reselling tickets proved to be a difficult task.
